▫️ Why stress turns against the body
Dr. Gabor Maté shares that 80% of autoimmune diseases happen to women, where the immune system attacks the body it is supposed to protect. When Mel asks why, he does not point to biology alone. He points to lifelong patterns of self abandonment. These beliefs lead you into not saying no to the demands of the world, constantly taking on stress and other people’s stress. That chronic stress undermines the immune system, which then turns against you. The body says no when we cannot.
▫️ Four patterns he saw before people got sick
Knowing people before they got sick and in the context of their families, he saw four characteristics. One, they tended to put other people’s emotional needs ahead of their own. Two, they identified with duty, role and responsibility rather than the needs of the self. Three, they tended to be very nice, which means they “repressed healthy anger.” And four, they believed they are responsible for how other people feel, that they must never disappoint anybody.
▫️ Not a gender issue, a cultural issue
Why is it women? Because who in this culture is programmed to always look after everybody else’s emotional needs, taking everybody’s stresses, identify with duties and roles, be nice all the time, not be angry in a healthy way, and take responsibility for other people’s feelings? It is women. As he says, it is not a gender issue, it is a cultural issue. Healing begins when we give ourselves permission to feel anger, set boundaries, and let others feel what they feel, which is the heart of letting them.
