The Mayan Fun Fact:
Scientists have made many comparisons between the Maya and other civilizations and eras, ranging from speculations that they were the forerunners of Freemasonry to the discovery of connections with the Hopi Indians, supported by striking similarities in ancient symbols. According to legend, the first Maya came from the sky or emerged from land or sea. They were associated with Atlanteans, Lemurians, as well as Asians, Egyptians, and Africans.
All of this would point to the existence of a common origin of the human race—a single ancestral motherland. In many cultures, the root MAYA appears in the names for the ancient ancestors: for example, MAYAX in Africa, NAGA-MAYA in Hindi, CARA-MAYA in Greece.
Why does the name of a Mesoamerican people appear across various regions of the world? Did they choose this name on purpose? Where did the Maya come from? These are questions that remain unanswered. Modern anthropological knowledge suggests that the Maya were part of a nomadic people who, during the last Ice Age about 12,000 years ago, migrated from Asia to the Americas via the Bering Strait, eventually settling in what is now Central America.
Reading Maya texts, one gets the impression that they truly came from afar:
“From the other side of the sea we came to the place called Tulan, which became our beginning and where we were born from our mothers and fathers.” (The Chronicles of the Cakchiquels)
