ICE did not invent the caseload. The prior administration dismantled the deterrents, expanded parole, and turned the border into a processing line. Record encounters and got-aways were not weather. They were policy. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris owned that policy for four years.

Agents who now have to find, arrest, and remove people who were waved through are cleaning up someone else’s decision. Anger aimed at the officers is a gift to the politicians who created the inventory. The people who ended Remain in Mexico, slowed interior enforcement, and sold catch-and-release as compassion are the ones who filled the cities and the dockets.

Unvetted mass entry is a security failure and a fiscal one. Citizens paid for the hotels, the schools, the ERs, and the crime that followed. The remedy is the opposite stack: a closed line, interior removals, and an end to the programs that turned illegal presence into a protected status. Blame the architects. Back the people doing the removals. That is the only division that matches the record.

A national museum system that lives on a billion dollars of federal money is not a private seminar. It is a public trust. When the exhibits start teaching a political catechism instead of the country’s actual history and achievements, the people who fund the buildings have a right to pull the plug.

Visitors come to see aircraft, fossils, and the documents that made a republic. They do not come to be scolded in the gift shop. Institutions that forget that distinction treat taxpayers as a captive audience. Captive audiences eventually stop being willing.

Funding is not a human right for curators. It is a bargain: preserve the collection, tell the story straight, and leave the campaigning to people who do not live on appropriations. A notice that the bargain will be enforced is how a public museum stays public instead of becoming a privately held opinion with a marble facade.
