A STOLEN PATROL CAR… RECOVERED ABOUT 90 MILES AWAY.
PORT ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA — A marked Broward Sheriff’s Office Dodge Charger reported stolen from outside the agency’s Fort Lauderdale headquarters was recovered in another county on September 22, authorities say.
Shortly after 9 p.m., officials received a report that the vehicle had been taken from the public parking area at BSO’s Public Safety Building on West Broward Boulevard.
Around 9:40 p.m., St. Lucie County deputies, Port St. Lucie police and Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded after learning the car was traveling north on I-95 near Gatlin Boulevard. Troopers located it abandoned on the northbound exit ramp.
Deputies say they found Shannon Marie Dillon, 42, of Fort Lauderdale nearby wearing a protective vest displaying Broward Sheriff’s Office markings. She was taken into custody.
Authorities listed several charges, including grand theft of law enforcement equipment, unlawful use of a police badge or law enforcement vehicle, driving with a suspended license and resisting an officer without violence. Additional allegations involve identification documents and other items reportedly in her possession. She also faces theft-related charges in Broward County.
Dillon appeared before a St. Lucie County judge on September 23.
BSO said its Internal Affairs unit is reviewing how the vehicle was taken and whether any agency policy was violated. The allegations have not been proven in court.
