I’ve started to write this a couple of times today—but I am just so defeated. I haven’t used horse manure on my garden for many, many years because of the w**d issue, but this year I incorporated some into my garden beds, deep enough so that Bermuda seeds wouldn’t be able to germinate. I never dreamed that I’d ruin my entire garden with it. If you look carefully at the pictures, you’ll see the damage to my okra. I also have tomato plants twisting. To make a long story bearable, I have 2-4-D damage, caused by the herbicide sprayed in the hayfields where my horses’ hay comes from. It can, and does, go through the horse into their urine and manure. Applied to a garden, the chemical will stay active about 5 years. I’ve had plants tested and just got the results this morning. All my plants are tainted, can’t eat the produce and all the beds will have to be dug out and refilled.

I'm a former Marine who needed to get away so I built this cabin in the woods of Maine, and this is our third Winter here. I worked on a friends motorcycle (who is a carpenter) for free a bunch of times in exchange for helping me build my cabin. Well when the time came for me to build my cabin which I only had a month to do he came up with a months worth of excuses so I ended up building it by myself. I didn't know anything about carpentry or building a cabin so between YouTube and a carpentry book I bought I got it built but I'm not happy with how it came out. I know I could do a much better job now but I'm kinda stuck between fixing up my cabin and adding an extra room, roof, and more windows, or just starting over which I really can't afford. I also need a well and septic someday but in the meantime I need to figure out a waterless inside toilet that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
PS: I have an outhouse and we use a 5 gal bucket with a "luggable loo seat" at night and when it's cold. But I'm looking to upgrade so it looks like a home made compost toilet will work until I get my well and septic in. Thanks everyone for your replies and help, I really appreciate it ❤️

My motto: if it's free, it's for me. Money has been really tight for my family the last several years. My wife has undergone 6 brain surgeries and even with good medical insurance, through my job, it isn't enough to pay both the medical bills and our regular bills. So I've been utilizing every spare time I had to generate some extra money. I see a lot of posts about how to get money to sustain a "homestead ". Here's were I started: selling our possessions, collecting scrap metal, bartering, butchering for trade, selling our eggs to a local butcher shop, working at previously mention butcher shop part time, scouring the internet for deals and making connections. The last one is kind of the main reason for this post. I've met a lot of great humble people through this interweb and we can help each other out if we put ourselves out there. I'm also a HUGE fan of the barter system which eliminates the need for paper currency. Sorry, getting off track.

So today's deal of the day is on "mulch" or as I like to call them wood chips. I found a landscaper who was not only giving away free firewood (ash and maple) but has a mountain of wood chips that he's getting rid of too. When his business starts to slow down, they're even going to deliver it. SCORE!!!!!!

Advice wanted, seasoned folks!

Okay. After years of lurking here & having a garden & chickens, I'm looking at moving off grid, with a 6 year old, without another adult, on a limited budget, mid summer. I have to be out of my rental by then and cost of living is ridiculous here so apparently it's time to move off grid.

I've found land deals in an area I can afford (and still drive back to visit the grandma & family monthly)

I am going to bring the chickens. I am going to build a cob house and of course file a building permit which also let's us live in an RV on the property while building.

Properties on the table are 2-8 acres, somewhat arid area, have to haul water until drilling a well. Final choice likely comes down to highest water table but please give advice based on experience.

✳️✳️What would you do to prepare for this kind of move? ❇️❇️

✔️ Solar power is one thing to learn about and at least practice setting up/charging a few devices with a few panels before moving. A few good solar lights to have an outdoor space & check animals in the night? Links are *so* appreciated if you have recommendations that make your life easier 💓

✔️ how do you prepare a child for a change like this? She's 6, able to care for small animals and cook a bit, but she's going to lose her endless cheetos supply 😆 So what made this easier on your kids?

✔️ inexpensive solar gadgets that really are worth the cost? Like lights? Maybe charge a TV for a weekly movie? Warm water for the child's bath?

✔️ What questions do I ask about the property? Water table, zoning, taxes, proximity to current power lines, but what else?

✔️ what do you take from modern living, what do you leave? I can leave most of it. But advice is welcome. I plan to take gardening & animal husbandry care books, plus a few boxes of entertainment books. I will take my greenhouse & gardening supplies & my chickens set up.

✔️ what else? I'll bring a few board games, lots of kids books & art supplies, but don't want to take a ton of crap.

Goals are to eventually have a handful of goats, 2-3 horses/ponies (yes, lots of horse and livestock experience and no rush on doing that before the place is ready) plus a few dozen chicken or up to 150 if space allows, and a greenhouse, big garden, and a microgreens enterprise. Someday I'll dig & stock a pond.

A few trees are a must, so is some open sunny space ... definitely compatible with the properties I'm eyeballing. It's okay if it takes a few years of mulch & manure to have good garden soil.

Please don't lecture me on the hardships & down sides. I'm going to do this, I'm not afraid of the blood/sweat/tears/solitude. I'm asking what you'd do to prepare, if you were at my stage with the wisdom you have now. I have 60-90 days to prep and after the land & building permits & RV, only a few thousand dollars available for immediate purchases.

Canning, gardening, butchering, and livestock is not new to me. But doing it all, alone, definitely will be a learning curve.

Pic of my chicks for tax.

Ahhh.. the amazing yet simple joys of spring! Planting the potatoes.. I can't wait for those and all the rest of the veggies to start growing, the satisfaction of feeding our family with home grown food... there's just nothing like it!

Looking for advice, please. We have these amazing concrete raised beds, which makes gardening and w**ding within the beds so easy. However, the w**d barrier and bark on the ground do very little to keep the w**ds at bay. We were thinking of growing grass instead. Does anyone here have any input or other ideas? Thank you.
