If The White Stripes were Detroit’s most famous exponent of post-millennial garage rock, The Von Bondies give them a run for their money on PAWN SHOPPE HEART. The quartet’s major label debut after two indie releases, the 2004 Sire set was recorded in the Bay Area and produced by Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison, who gives Jason Stollsteimer’s vocals and Don Blum’s drum work a thrilling immediacy. Opener “No Regrets” and singles “C'mon C'mon” and “Tell Me What You See” are clear highlights, but if there’s a running theme to fan reviews, it’s the wallop these dozen originals deliver as a whole (a hidden cover of “Try a Little Tenderness” closes the set). A Top Ten entry on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, PAWN SHOPPE HEART beats strong from start to finish.
