As distinctive as their debut was, follow-up THE CIRCUS was the album that put Erasure on the path to synth-pop stardom. Co-producer Flood improves on his earlier work with the duo, and Andy Bell & Vince Clarke deliver a terrific set of originals, including “Sometimes,” “Victim of Love,” and “It Doesn't Have to Be” (all successful U.K. singles). While many songs touch on social issues, you might overlook that given the plentiful hooks, melodies and soulful rhythms here, and the pair’s vocal and keyboard performances are impressive throughout. The group’s breakthrough in their native England, THE CIRCUS shot into the Top 10 there and remains Erasure’s longest-running album on the British charts.
