Album of the Day: Disco Inferno - The Trammps (1976)

Philadelphia vocal group The Trammps were early adopters of disco, harmonizing to irresistible dance rhythms with a little help from their friends in MFSB, Philly soul hitmakers in their own right who provided production and instrumental support. The Trammps made the big time with “Disco Inferno,” which was just a minor hit until its inclusion in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack pushed it back up to #11 on the pop chart. Album of the Day: Young Hearts Run Free - Candi Staton (1976)

Alabama-born Candi Staton learned the musical ropes as a gospel singer before shifting to Southern soul in the late 1960s. But she may be best remembered for a disco song cut with writer/producer David Crawford – who was taking notes during a lunchtime conversation when Staton revealed she was in an abusive relationship. “Young Hearts Run Free” hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart and became the title track to the performer’s second Warner Bros. album in 1976. With several other strong Crawford originals (“Run To Me,” “Destiny”), some terrific covers (“Living For You,” “Summer Time With You") and fine arrangements by Sylvester Rivers, YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE became Candi Staton’s most successful album. Album of the Day: KC and the Sunshine Band - KC and the Sunshine Band (1975)

Disco spent more than a decade in the critical doghouse before the pop craftsmanship – and immense likability – of the genre's best music became undeniable. As producers/songwriters, Harry Wayne “KC” Casey and Richard Finch had tasted some success with George McCrae's “Rock Your Baby” before hitting it big with their own act a year later. Actually the group's second album, KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND helped put disco on the map with a pair of No.1 singles: “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s The Way (I Like It).” There's plenty more to love among the nine originals on this 1975 set; if “Boogie Shoes” and “I Get Lifted” can't get you moving, check your pulse. The dancefloor anthems and propulsive funk that KC and the Sunshine Band serve up on their eponymous triple-Platinum set are the perfect kick-off to Rhino’s week-long salute to disco.

Album Of The Day: Ice Cream Castle - The Time

The third Time proved a charm with ICE CREAM CASTLE - the 1984 collection was a Top 10 R&B hit and eventually certified Platinum to become the Minneapolis group’s best-selling album. It didn’t hurt that the set hit stores just before Purple Rain hit movie theaters; Time frontman Morris Day has a scene-stealing role in the film and singles “Jungle Love” and “The Bird” are both heard on its soundtrack. Cloaked by a pseudonym, Prince produced the record and provided much of its instrumentation (though Jesse Johnson more than holds his own on guitar). While The Time would disband shortly after its release, ICE CREAM CASTLE remains a melt-in-your-mouth mixture of propulsive electro-funk and paisley-tinged pop.
