ALBUM OF THE DAY: Cornershop - When I Was Born For The 7th Time (1997)
Cornershop’s third collection, WHEN I WAS BORN FOR THE 7TH TIME, proved a charm for the U.K. indie group; raves from the likes of Spin, Q and The Village Voice’s Robert Christgau (“international pop so seamless that its fusion of alt-rock, Punjabi melody, hip hop, and what-all is subsumed into its own song-based catchiness”) made it one of the most acclaimed releases of 1997. With production assistance from Dan the Automator, frontman Tjinder Singh and company serve up 14 originals (plus a cover of “Norwegian Wood”), the most famous of which is “Brimful of Asha,” a tribute to singer Asha Bhosle that became a hit around the globe. Certified Gold in England, WHEN I WAS BORN FOR THE 7TH TIME stands as one of the most distinctive albums of the 1990s. ALBUM OF THE DAY: Faith No More - Angel Dust (1992)
On the heels of their breakthrough THE REAL THING, Faith No More headed into San Francisco's Coast Recorders with longtime producer Matt Wallace to cut this defiantly weird 1992 follow-up. Unlike its predecessor, ANGEL DUST features the full songwriting participation of frontman Mike Patton, whose twisted sense of humor finds a home in kindergartens, RV parks and operating rooms. The rest of the band is equally inspired, with particularly fine work from keyboardist Roddy Bottum and guitarist Jim Martin (who would leave Faith No More after this album) augmented by a wild selection of samples. Highlighted by singles “Midlife Crisis,” “A Small Victory,” and “Everything's Ruined,” ANGEL DUST reached the Billboard Top 10. ALBUM OF THE DAY: Morphine - Yes (1995)
With a sound built around bass (frontman Mark Sandman), saxophones (Dana Colley) and drums (Billy Conway), Morphine was among the most unusual alternative rock groups of the 1990s. YES was the Cambridge, MA trio’s third album and their first to make the Billboard chart (just missing the Top 100), though sales figures are hardly the best metric for bands this challenging. A desperate intensity courses through the 1995 Rykodisc collection, even on upbeat songs like “Honey White” and “Super Sex,” and the couple of live-in-studio recordings here only underline the consistency of vision. YES ranks with Morphine’s very best, and will prove addictive to listeners looking for late-night solace...

ALBUM OF THE DAY: Ride - Going Blank (1992)
Ride were leaders of the U.K. alternative style dubbed “shoegaze” (partly in reference to the heavy use of guitar effects pedals), and the Oxford quartet followed up their genre-defining debut for Creation Records with GOING BLANK AGAIN. While tracks like opener “Leave Them All Behind” feature the hazy, wall-of-sound guitars and richly layered vocals of NOWHERE, this confident 1992 collection also boasts bright melodies on such songs as “Time Of Her Time” and “Twisterella” - a power-pop single if ever there was one. With more accessible material and sharper production (courtesy of Alan Moulder), GOING BLANK AGAIN is arguably superior to the band's acclaimed first album.

ALBUM OF THE DAY: The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic (1995)
“She Don't Use Jelly” may have put The Flaming Lips on the alternative music map, but CLOUDS TASTE METALLIC took Oklahoma's most fearless freaks into uncharted territory. The 1995 Warner Bros. collection serves as a bridge between the group's indie rock roots and the more ambitious studio experimentation of THE SOFT BULLETIN. As titles like “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles” or “This Here Giraffe” suggest, the lyrics are rather surreal, but frontman Wayne Coyne makes them sound personal and even joyful. The instrumental palette is over the top as well, though in the service of strong melodies, and features plenty of fine guitar work by Ronald Jones, who would leave the band the following year. The set's critical reputation has risen steadily since its release and CLOUDS TASTE METALLIC stands as one of The Flaming Lips' very best.
