ALBUM OF THE DAY: Cornershop - When I Was Born For The 7th Time (1997)
Cornershop’s third collection, WHEN I WAS BORN FOR THE 7TH TIME, proved a charm for the U.K. indie group; raves from the likes of Spin, Q and The Village Voice’s Robert Christgau (“international pop so seamless that its fusion of alt-rock, Punjabi melody, hip hop, and what-all is subsumed into its own song-based catchiness”) made it one of the most acclaimed releases of 1997. With production assistance from Dan the Automator, frontman Tjinder Singh and company serve up 14 originals (plus a cover of “Norwegian Wood”), the most famous of which is “Brimful of Asha,” a tribute to singer Asha Bhosle that became a hit around the globe.
