If The White Stripes were Detroit’s most famous exponent of post-millennial garage rock, The Von Bondies give them a run for their money on PAWN SHOPPE HEART. The quartet’s major label debut after two indie releases, the 2004 Sire set was recorded in the Bay Area and produced by Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison, who gives Jason Stollsteimer’s vocals and Don Blum’s drum work a thrilling immediacy. Opener “No Regrets” and singles “C'mon C'mon” and “Tell Me What You See” are clear highlights, but if there’s a running theme to fan reviews, it’s the wallop these dozen originals deliver as a whole (a hidden cover of “Try a Little Tenderness” closes the set). A Top Ten entry on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, PAWN SHOPPE HEART beats strong from start to finish. When one of Toronto bassist Jesse Keeler’s concerts was canceled following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he invited drummer Sebastien Grainger over to jam and Death From Above 1979 was born. Following an indie EP, the duo released their full-length debut YOU’RE A WOMAN, I’M A MACHINE in 2004, and it’s dance-punk that delivers on both fronts; tracks like “Blood on Our Hands,” “Romantic Rights” and “Turn It Out” pulse with urgency. We’ll leave the last words to Pitchfork: “Some might bemoan the album's accessibility, but that's hooks, actual song structure, and broken hearts for you: By turning the rock k**b down a notch, DFA79 have kept YOU’RE A WOMAN loud and nasty and ensured a cohesion and unusual degree of listenability.”

Ministry's dark and intense fusion of industrial and metal musics reached a peak on THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE. The title, cover art, and even the samples (from films such as Full Metal Jacket, Prince of Darkness, and Hellraiser II) in these nine tracks show a band out for blood, but the 1989 Sire collection is as rewarding as it is challenging. Recording sessions at Chicago Trax Studios were rather disjointed, with band members working alone for the most part, but frontman Al Jourgensen and partner-in-crime Paul Barker fashioned a compelling and sinister whole from them. Packed with buzzing guitar riffs, piledriver rhythms and menacing vocals, the Gold-certified THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO TASTE turns an x-ray eye on political, cultural, environmental and personal collapse. Though they reunited seven years ago, 2003’s CORAL FANG remains the most recent studio album by L.A. punk heroes The Distillers. The band's major label debut following a pair of indie releases, the Sire set features frontwoman Brody Dalle unleashing a torrent of rage and despair on 11 originals, including “Drain the Blood,” “The Hunger,” and “Beat Your Heart Out.” You can credit producer Gil Norton (The Pixies, Foo Fighters) for adding some polish without dampening The Distillers' power, building on top-notch songs and the quartet's fiery performances.
