As distinctive as their debut was, follow-up THE CIRCUS was the album that put Erasure on the path to synth-pop stardom. Co-producer Flood improves on his earlier work with the duo, and Andy Bell & Vince Clarke deliver a terrific set of originals, including “Sometimes,” “Victim of Love,” and “It Doesn't Have to Be” (all successful U.K. singles). While many songs touch on social issues, you might overlook that given the plentiful hooks, melodies and soulful rhythms here, and the pair’s vocal and keyboard performances are impressive throughout. The group’s breakthrough in their native England, THE CIRCUS shot into the Top 10 there and remains Erasure’s longest-running album on the British charts. Pianist Greta Salpeter and guitarist Bob Morris were in junior high and high school, respectively, when they began playing music together; with the later addition of a bassist and a drummer, The Hush Sound was born. Things moved quickly for the Chicago quartet, particularly after their debut caught the ear of Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, who signed the group to his label and hooked them up with bandmate Patrick Stump and FOB producer Sean O'Keefe to helm LIKE VINES. Playful and melodic, the 2006 collection adds a variety of instrumental touches to 11 originals, including opener “We Intertwined” (from which the set’s title was drawn), “Lions Roar” and “Don't Wake Me Up,” with the voices of Morris and Salpeter serving as perfect foils. Reaching both Billboard’s Indie and Heatseekers charts, the exuberant LIKE VINES is sure to grow on you. Talk Talk was one of the most intriguing British groups of the 1980s, rising from New Romantic-styled roots to synth-pop success to experimental music. THE COLOUR OF SPRING captures the band near the peak of that arc, reaching the U.K. Top 10 on the strength of such originals as “Living in Another World” and international hit “Life's What You Make It.” Such guests as Steve Winwood and Robbie McIntosh lend a hand to the core trio of singer/keyboardist Mark Hollis, bassist Paul Webb and drummer Lee Harris on the 1986 collection; Hollis and producer Tim Friese-Greene co-wrote these eight tracks, which are as accessible as they are adventurous (avant-garde composers like Béla Bartók were influences). Talk Talk's most commercially successful set worldwide, THE COLOUR OF SPRING, is also one of the band’s best. Kraftwerk’s final album of the 1970s, THE MAN-MACHINE, saw the German group embrace fuller arrangements, dance rhythms and melody to lay the groundwork for what would become synth-pop in the following decade. Lyricist Ralf Hütter takes a wry view of technology and life in the big city on these half-dozen longish tracks (percussionist Karl Bartos also has a writing credit on all songs), with “The Robots” and “The Model” among the standouts. The 1978 collection was particularly successful in England, eventually reaching the Top 10 and Gold certification there, and its influence on such U.K. artists as Gary Numan, Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys is plain to hear. Best known as Little Feat’s guiding light, Lowell George released a single solo album, THANKS, I’LL EAT IT HERE, shortly before his untimely death in 1979. Not a fan of the jazz-fusion his group had favored on recent releases, the Warner Bros. collection harks back to the musical gumbo of R&B, southern rock and blues that had made DIXIE CHICKEN so tasty. With several fine covers (including songs by Allen Toussaint, Ann Peebles and Rickie Lee Jones) joined by such George originals as “Twenty Million Things,” the set has an easygoing charm that grows with each listen. With the sound of mid-'90s alt-rock and the sensibility of arena rock from a couple of decades earlier, Matchbox Twenty became one of the most successful bands in America with YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU, which sold steadily for years to reach RIAA Diamond status. The band's 2000 follow-up, MAD SEASON, was an even more accomplished effort, featuring richer production, more varied instrumentation and a batch of outstanding songs including “Angry,” “Crutch,” “If You're Gone” and “Bent,” which went to No.1 on the U.S. singles chart.
