I founded Songwriters' Studio Services in 1984 with the concept of providing songwriters an affordable and creative studio to develop and record quality demos, jingles, and independent albums. Being a songwriter, and being involved with many other prolific writers, I felt there was a need in the community for local musicians to have a home base to hone their craft. Over the many years in existence
, the studio has produced many recordings of new songs, audition tapes, karaoke tracks, radio spots, and independent album productions. Songwriters' Studio Services has also been an educational site for new engineers and producers to advance their recording skills. The studio is located in Sherwood Forest, CA., centrally located in the San Fernando Valley. It is a 900 square-foot facility utilizing a control room, lounge, amp room, vocal/acoustic booth, and a performance room for live drums. Private and personal, the comfortable rooms provide for quality sound and quiet recording. Vaulted 15-foot high ceilings allow for additional air space and ambience. A Mackie 8-buss mixer and the Steinberg Cubase digital computer recording system drive the studio as well as an Alesis HD24 digital recorder for 24 bit unlimited tracking potential. A full back-line is available for you to use including quality guitar/bass amplifiers and drums. Included with your sessions, I will produce, engineer, and contribute guitar, bass, and pedal steel guitar services at your request for no additional fees. Also available to you is a large selection of quality musicians for any style of music (additional fees and scheduling required). Songwriters' Studio Services can master your final mixes in preparing your project for the final stages of production. We will work with you to ensure a positive experience with quality results, along with creating a personal and comfortable environment for you to enjoy your music. Robert Heft is available as a producer, engineer, studio, or performance guitarist/bassist/pedal steel guitarist for productions with Songwriters' Studio Services or for freelance situations. You can also book a same-day 6-hour block rate at $250. For any information involving sessions, scheduling, or performance dates,

The finished product, came out excellent.
Building a new Frankenmaster. Starting with the neck from All-Parts. Large headstock, rosewood board of some sort, 7.25 radius. I'm very surprised and happy with the quality of this neck. All new necks should have the frets dressed to remove sharp edges and file marks. This one I just finished today and came out awesome and I put on a light stain to seal the wood and of course my signature. More to come on this, it will be black with white pickguard and pickups.
Here's a 1930s Orpheum Senator then I'm finishing up a minor restoration on. This belongs to the Dell family. Mainly repairing some binding, securing some inlay, fret dress and clean up of rust and oxidation. L**e and oil the gears. Set up action and intonation. Guitar is wonderful.
This just came in the shop for cleaning and repairs. It's from the 30's and a valuable family heirloom. Love to see all this cool stuff coming in.
Early G&L belonging to Tedd Baron
For those that asked, here's the final product. Battle scars and all, it's a beautiful thing and the tones are outrageous.
Updates
Working on an early '60s Teisco ET230 Sharkfin. Huge sentimental value to the client. Major cleaning job as there are many, many layers of caked schmutz all over. Had to use Easy Off oven cleaner to clean it. Works like a charm. All electronics work but there are some issues with grounding and potentiometers. More to come.
Scott Wallenberg from Boise, Idaho's Blues Addicts in the studio last night tracking a JJ Cale classic cover. Fun stuff.
This is my Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 String Bass I'm doing a fret level and dress on. It belonged to my life-long friend John Warner RIP. I'll be putting it up for sale as I have other basses and I'm not using it. It especially records great. Solid quilt maple, no veneer. It is a jumbo. IM me if you're interested, it's near mint.
Here's a quick follow-up on the Marvel guitar progress. The pickup actually works very well so I'm going to keep it as do the potentiometers. I reinstalled the electronics with a new ground wire and everything is perfect. The frets on the other hand are very unlevel and this guitar does not have a truss rod so it's a little bit of guesswork to level out the frets which I'm doing now. The neck is quite thick so I'm fairly sure that it's not going to flex much under string tension. There was a good bit of fret sprout and sharp edges which I've already filed off.
The great Deke Dickerson came by Songwriters' Studio Services today. Such a great guy, great player and historian. Thanks for coming by Deke
I have to post this beautiful photo of this young lady after receiving her completed guitar with modifications at Anthem Music School. Many thanks to Jared Canchola and Anthem Music located in Chatsworth, CA.
For those of you that may have seen the video on my humbucker mod for a client's telecaster, the surgery has been done and now it's time to wire it up. We're going to use two volume k***s and no tone. Here's how it looks so far and I am very pleased.
Look at this gorgeous Martin CE0-8. This amazing sounding and very expensive guitar belongs to my client and friend Gary Adelstein. I'm performing a setup to lower the action and lighten up the strings to get it to play more to his liking. It'll play amazing when I'm done. Nut re-slot and lowering the bridge saddle. Here we go.
Time to fret dress THE SG. Just a few dings and ridges. Jon Gold and I share this guitar. It's so good we call it God's guitar. Took me 5 years to get it out of Jon's collection. The best SG ever
Working on a complete fret dress and level on my friend Andy Roth's Gibson Explorer. I think it's a 1990.
Instrument repair, one of my happy places.
Recording pedal steel tracks today for some great new music from Mr. Gil Karson
Working on client instruments today. Fret dress with sprout removal. Full setup. If you need work on guitars contact me 818.400.6294. Text is best. Photo by AJ Freeman-Anderson
Isn't it time to get into the studio and start recording all of those songs that you wrote during COVID lockdown? Let's do it.
Clean and happy drums. Back to a 4-piece miced up for 8 tracks at Songwriters'Studio Services in Northridge, CA.
Let's get your instruments playing like buttah, playing in tune, and electronically sound. Reasonable prices and pro services. A happy instrument means a happy musician. Stop procrastinating and call me. rh
This bass came to me with multiple issues through Anthem Music School located in Chatsworth, CA. The teachers there really care about their students and their instruments. This Sterling was an absolute mess with rusty dirty strings and covered in DNA goo. Additionally none of the electronics worked on this active instrument. I bathed this bass, repaired multiple electronic issues, and set it up beautifully. Like the homeless getting a makeover, this is an absolute gem of a bass. If you need guitar or bass repairs and/or setups, I'm reasonably priced, provide quick return, and guarantee all of my work. Also if you are looking for quality music lessons, contact Jared or Phil at Anthem Music. You can call or text me at 818.400.6294. I'm in Northridge, CA. rh
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood for a session with the great Albert Lee. Absolutely brilliant today working for the Phillipsens.
The Dell Family is back in the studio after 2 years of Covid! Welcome back lady and gents
Mookie in the studio today. Woof!
Ted Gonlag (Teddy Paul) tracking Nashville high string in the studio tonight.
Robert from Songwriters' Studio Services here. This Yamaha acoustic took a very unfortunate spill off of a guitar stand and broke its neck. The resulting tension from the strings pulled the whole split neck off and the fingerboard. Amazingly the fingerboard is hardly damaged and the plan at this point as you can see is to piece it back together bit by bit and fill in cracks as well as can be done. Hoping for the best here. Ultimately there will be sanding done to smooth out the repair and if the client wants a refinish it will go over to the amazing Pat Wilkins
I don't usually work on Sundays but when I do it's with some very talented folks. Kyle Culkin and Albert Lee
Working for the incomparable Mr. Lee today.
Life is good. Beautiful guitar tracks.
Any day in the studio with the great Albert Lee is a great day. Nice to meet his lovely wife also. Terrific performances. Special thanks to Susan Rey.
