AMAZON TO PAY $7.25 MILLION TO D.C. RESIDENTS IN MAJORITY-BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS
Amazon has agreed to pay $7.25 million in refunds to about 69,000 customers in D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8 after being accused of secretly excluding the two majority-Black areas from its fastest, in-house delivery services.
Starting in 2022, Amazon relied on slower third-party carriers in ZIP codes 20019 and 20020, while Prime customers continued paying the same membership fees. D.C. officials also said Amazon failed to tell affected customers about the change and misled them about the reason for delivery delays.
Amazon denies wrongdoing, saying the changes were made because of safety concerns.
For Black communities that already face limited access to stores, pharmacies and other resources, equal service shouldn’t be a privilege.
