Is the CD making its way back?

CD sales are outpacing vinyl sales: CDs outsold vinyl during the first half of the year in America, according to Luminate’s mid-year report. CD sales grew by 16% compared to last year.
K-pop plays an important role: Nearly 10% of the growth in CD sales came from K-pop. K-pop consumers account for a significant amount of CD purchases. One factor contributing to this demand is that physical albums are often tied to collectible merchandise and entries into fan meeting or event lotteries.
Despite K-pop, CD sales are still growing. Even without K-pop sales, CD sales still increased by 6.7% this year. This isn’t the first sign of a potential CD comeback. In early 2022, Billboard reported that CD sales increased by 1.1% in 2021—the first increase since 2004. This year, however, CD sales have seen a much more significant increase of 16%.
I think this is really good since artists need support from selling the physical copies, and having people to support that would be amazing.

Sony Music Sues Kroger Over Unauthorized Music

Sony Music sued Kroger and 18 affiliates on August 21, alleging at least 392 unauthorized uses of Sony recordings in social ads. Named songs include tracks by Mariah Carey, OutKast, Bill Withers, and Harry Styles.

Sony says Kroger had licensed its music at least 14 times since 2017, making the alleged infringement “willful.” Kroger spent about $1.18 billion on advertising in fiscal 2025 while allegedly refusing to pay for the music in it.

The case is ongoing, with Sony seeking up to $150,000 per infringed work. It comes days after Sony reached a settlement in principle with DSW in a similar case.

Spotify and Kobalt Are Bringing Licensed Fan Remixes to Streaming

Spotify Signs a New Deal with Kobalt
Spotify and Kobalt have signed a new licensing agreement covering Spotify’s upcoming fan-made covers and remixes feature. The tool will let users build new versions of participating songs without ever stepping outside an officially licensed system. Spotify plans to sell the feature as a paid add-on for Premium subscribers, which means a kind of music-making that has mostly lived unofficially online now moves onto the platform itself.
Rights Holders Will Get Paid
What makes this different is that Spotify is building the feature on permission from rights holders rather than around them. Participating songwriters and artists will receive credit and compensation whenever fans use their music, opening up another possible revenue stream. Spotify has also said the system will link fan-made versions back to the original music, so a remix does not float free of the artist and song it came from. I think that connective piece matters as much as the payment does.
More Music Companies Are Joining
Kobalt did not get there first. Spotify had already reached related agreements with Universal Music Group and with Merlin, which represents a large group of independent labels and rights holders. The tool has not launched yet, but the deals keep stacking up, and to me that signals something specific: Spotify wants a working legal framework for fan remixes and AI-assisted music creation instead of letting those uses sit in a copyright gray area.

Sony, Universal and IFPI Are Suing This “Free Music” App

Sony Music and Universal Music are taking legal action in Canada against Musi, an app that streams music by pulling it directly from YouTube without permission. IFPI says Musi deliberately bypasses YouTube’s copyright protections to steal content, while profiting off it through ads and subscriptions.

Musi markets itself as a free streaming app, but it never had a license to any of the music it plays.
IFPI’s CEO called it a “parasitic app,” built specifically to exploit artists while undermining the services that actually pay for music.

Apple already removed Musi from the App Store back in 2024 over the same issue. The app is still running for anyone who downloaded it before then.

Musi previously sued Apple over that App Store removal and lost the case earlier this year.
Now IFPI, Sony, and Universal are pushing for something bigger: coordinated pressure on app stores to block apps like Musi entirely instead of removing them one at a time.

3 things happening in pop music.

1)Ariana Grande takes a step back from visibility after tour. Ariana’s The Eternal Sunshine Tour wraps on September 1st, the reps for the pop star stated that she is stepping out of the spotlight for an extended break. The statement cited that the “ongoing public scrutiny” is one of the reasons for the pause .

2)Country Songs Take All Five Slots in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 5 for the First Time in Chart History
For the first time in history, all five slots on the Billboard Hot 100 are claimed by country songs. Ella’s ‘Choosin’ Texas’ remained at No.1, while Morgan’s new single occupied No.2. Taylor’s return to country ‘ I Knew It, I Knew You’ at No.3, and Stella at No.5.

3)Audrey Nuna Signs To Republic Record
The singer who recently broke out as the voice of Mira in “KPop Demon Hunters” paired up with Grammy-winning producer Cirkut on her new single ‘superHuman’. Audrey has signed to Republic Records in advance.
“I’m honored to work with a partner that believes in investing in the future of music and culture,” says Nuna about signing to Republic.
