Jane McNealy who is a versatile and experienced songwriter who has been perfecting her craft and her passion with a mix of influences that make her sound unique. Working as a staff writer for Mercury records and under the wing of Jazz great Harold Battiste Jr. and Marzique Music Company, Jane created a prolific 20 year body of R&B, Jazz and contemporary music. OF MUSICAL THEATRE

Lo-Flo Records is not just about 60’s,70’s and 80’s music! Jane’s passion for musical theater has always been a huge influence on her body of work. Together with long-time collaborator, Alice Kuhns, Jane has had many Musicals produced and has received grants from Los Angeles to Portland to New York like “To Be Fred” “Primrose Hill” “Hotel Romeo and Juliette”. Jane is currently working with Alice Kuhns on their latest musical, “The Griffin.”

Jane’s dynamic style helps her write everything from jingles to scoring television to movie themes, and commercials. Among other specials, Jane created a percussive and animated score to the after school special, “Malcolm Takes a Shot”, as well as the nominated documentary “Miracles in the Making”, not to mention the cable special “The Slim Gourmet” with McClain Stevenson where Jane’s jazz talents shine through. SCORING FOR MOVIE THEMES

Jane studied Arranging and Orchestration with famed UCLA professor, Albert Harris, and she learned film scoring with Earl Hagen. With the theme song, “Fly Away”, which was sung by Petula Clark, Jane captures the emotion and feel of the feature film “Never Never Land” which was produced by Diane Baker in 1980.

Running Around, released by Lo-Flo Records in October of 2020, showcases the free style, melody-driven songs Jane McNealy wrote in the late 70s working with Harold Battiste, Jr.

The album is enriched by the contributions of the superb singers Tami Lynn, Judy Karp, Joyce Dunn, and Lydia Marcelle.

This week we’re commemorating the release of “All of You.” Written by Jane McNealy in 1979, this was a fertile creative period for Jane as she explored exciting new possibilities in her approach to songwriting.

Throughout her career, McNealy frequently worked with renowned jazz musician Harold Battiste Jr. This particular song emerged from recording sessions for an album they were creating with Battiste providing both the arrangements and his distinctive saxophone playing.

Battiste was particularly drawn to “All of You” and, in a spontaneous moment, decided to add his saxophone as the lead melody line. Lo-Flo Records is thrilled to present “When,” a previously unreleased archival recording by composer and songwriter Jane McNealy, featuring the distinctive voice of pop and soul singer Mel Carter.

Originally written in the late 1960s, it was a few years later when renowned jazz musician Harold Battiste Jr. found it while going through Jane‘s catalog and introduced it to Carter. The three of them recorded it during an informal session at Battiste’s Los Angeles home.

Mel Carter began his recording career in the 1960s and was mentored by the great Sam Cooke who signed Carter to his record label. Two stellar releases from his catalog include the 1963 hit, “When a Boy Falls in Love,” co-written by Cooke, and Carter’s best-known hit, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” that reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.

This week we’re celebrating the release of Jane McNealy’s “Country Boy,” written with her longtime friend Alice Kuhns. McNealy herself sings the elegy about a young man confronted with the emotional complexities of war.

The song is the third entry in McNealy’s archival series, “Songs from the Vault: Reel #3,” and remains one of the more poignant pieces in her songwriting catalog.

To accompany the song, Julie Flogeac created a haunting black-and-white tone poem filled with melancholy and a quiet sense of longing. It is among Flogeac’s most moving music videos, and can be viewed on the Lo-Flo Records YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/-florecords.

Lo-Flo Records is setting the Wayback machine for the 1960s when Jane McNealy wrote “What Can I Do Now” for pop sensation Lydia Marcelle. Impassioned and soulful, the piano-led ballad is steeped in the bittersweet ache of lost love.

Originally arranged by jazz legend Harold Battiste, Jr., the song was later remastered by Sameer Sengupta and comes alive in Julie Flogeac’s nostalgic ’60s-inspired video.
