🌹 CHRISTY ESSIEN-IGBOKWE — NIGERIA’S LADY OF SONGS 🇳🇬🎶

Christiana Uduak Essien-Igbokwe, popularly known as Christy Essien-Igbokwe, was one of the greatest female entertainers Nigeria has ever produced. She was a celebrated singer, songwriter, actress and cultural icon whose voice and music became part of the soundtrack of an entire generation.

Born on November 11, 1960, in Okat, Onna, Akwa Ibom State, Christy experienced the pain of losing her mother at just 12 years old. She later moved to Aba, Abia State, where a friend of her late mother encouraged her musical talent and supported her early passion for singing.

While still in secondary school, Christy began performing at clubs in Aba, including Uka Onu’s Club and Unikoko. She also appeared on NTA Aba programmes such as Now Sound, where her talent began attracting wider attention.

🎭 HER ACTING CAREER

Christy became a household name through the legendary Nigerian television sitcom The New Masquerade.

In 1976, she joined the cast and played Apena (Akpenor), the wife of the famously troublesome character Jegede Sokoya, played by Claude Eke. Her role on the show brought her enormous popularity and introduced her to millions of Nigerians.

But acting was only one side of her remarkable talent. Music would eventually make her a true legend.

🎤 HER MUSICAL JOURNEY

Christy launched her professional recording career in the late 1970s. Her debut album, “Freedom,” was released in 1977, followed by several successful albums including:

• Freedom (1977)
• Patience (1978)
• Time Waits for No One (1978)
• One Understanding (1979)
• Give Me a Chance (1980)
• Ever Liked My Person? (1981)
• It's Time (1982)
• Taking My Time (1986)
• Hear the Call (1990)
• Mysteries of Life (1992)

Her 1981 album “Ever Liked My Person?”, produced by Lemmy Jackson, became one of the defining works of her career.

Her songs included “Seun Rere,” “Tete Nu Na Ula,” “Ife,” “Hear the Call,” “Give Me a Chance,” “You Can't Change a Man,” and many others.

One of her greatest strengths was her ability to cross cultural and language barriers. Christy sang in Ibibio, Igbo, Efik, Hausa, Yoruba and English, bringing different Nigerian cultures together through music.

🌍 THE LADY OF SONGS

Christy Essien-Igbokwe became widely known as “Nigeria’s Lady of Songs.”

Her music combined elements of Nigerian traditional sounds with popular styles such as highlife, soul, R&B and pop. Her powerful voice, emotional delivery and ability to tell stories through music made her one of the most respected female musicians of her generation.

She was not simply an entertainer. She became a symbol of Nigerian culture, identity and female excellence.

🏆 A TRAILBLAZER FOR WOMEN

Christy also broke important barriers outside music.

She became the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and served as the managing director of Soul Train Entertainment Limited.

Her career demonstrated that a Nigerian woman could succeed not only as a performer but also as a leader within the entertainment industry.

❤️ HER LEGACY

Christy Essien-Igbokwe's influence continues long after her passing. She paved the way for many Nigerian female musicians and showed that African music could be both deeply rooted in culture and appealing to audiences across different generations.

Her songs, particularly “Seun Rere,” continue to evoke powerful memories of old Nigeria and remain beloved by people who grew up listening to her.

🕊️ HER FINAL YEARS

Christy Essien-Igbokwe died on June 30, 2011, in Lagos, at the age of 50, after an illness.

Although her life was cut short, her contribution to Nigerian entertainment remains unforgettable.

Today, whenever her voice plays, an entire generation remembers.

She was more than a singer.

She was an actress.
She was a pioneer.
She was a leader.
She was a cultural ambassador.
She was a woman who opened doors for those who came after her.

Christy Essien-Igbokwe — Nigeria’s Lady of Songs. 🇳🇬❤️🎶

Her voice may be gone, but her music will continue to speak to generations.
