The Texas State Board of Education has voted to make Bible passages required reading in public schools.

The education board, which is controlled by Republicans, voted to pass a new required reading list on Friday by a vote of 9-5-1. The list for required literature includes sections of the Book of Exodus for fifth graders, The Shepherd's Psalm for seventh graders and more.

Board discussions about the required reading list took place Friday morning and touched on issues related to the implementation timeline and the question of teacher autonomy in deciding which works should be required reading.

The Moscow-appointed head of Russian-occupied Crimea declared a state of emergency Friday following a wave of Ukrainian drone strikes that have crippled the peninsula's energy grid, triggered widespread blackouts, and forced severe fuel rationing.

Sergei Aksyonov announced the emergency measures on social media, acknowledging that Crimea's energy supply "remains difficult" and that he hoped the supply in Sevastopol would be fully restored. The declaration follows months of intensifying Ukrainian bombardments targeting energy infrastructure across Russia and the peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014.

The return of Crimea is one of Kyiv’s stated war aims following Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, and the peninsula has been hit hard by drone attacks and long queues at gas stations in recent months.

President Trump has brought national attention to the LA mayoral race by claiming, without evidence, that the election was "rigged" against former reality star Spencer Pratt.

Initial election night tallies placed Pratt in second place, but California's standard, multi-day mail-in ballot counting process saw progressive city councilmember Nithya Raman overtake him for the final runoff spot.

Experts suggest Trump’s attacks on California's mail-in voting are part of a broader strategy to question the validity of upcoming November election results.

Utah restricted fireworks and declared a state of emergency Friday ahead of July Fourth celebrations as the United States' largest wildfire expanded its reach across more tinder-dry forest, as crews rush to fight new blazes in the arid state.

The National Weather Service issued a rare "Particularly Dangerous Situation" warning as dry, windy conditions provided fuel for more fires across the western U.S.

The Cottonwood Fire in a sparsely populated area of southern Utah started Monday. It ballooned to more than 112 square miles by Friday, burning unchecked as strong winds grounded air support, forestry officials said. One of six large wildfires burning in Utah, it severely damaged the Eagle Point ski resort in Beaver County, forcing mandatory evacuations.

As of Friday evening, Utah had 10 active wildfires burning across more than 144,700 acres, according to the state's wildfire dashboard. The Cottonwood Fire had burned nearly 72,000 acres and is at 0% containment.

A U.S. soldier died earlier this month after being struck by an M2 Bradley fighting vehicle during a large-scale training exercise in California, an Army spokesperson said.

Adrian Bonsey, 29, was a combat engineer assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

Bonsey was on foot June 10 in a training area in the Mojave Desert during hours of limited visibility when he was run over by the 27-ton armored vehicle at about 4:30 a.m., the spokesperson said. The incident remains under investigation

A judge on Thursday ordered the Justice Department to either release unredacted versions of several files on the late s*x offender Jeffrey Epstein or explain why it can't do so, following a lawsuit accusing Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche of improperly redacting documents.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan gave the government until Thursday, July 2, to comply.

The documents in question include eight emails with either the sender or recipient blacked out, a draft indictment of Epstein with the names of potential co-conspirators obscured and a 2019 email that mentions several co-conspirators whose names were redacted. Sullivan also ordered the Justice Department to either release the interview notes behind several FBI documents summarizing unverified allegations against President Trump, or explain why it couldn't release them.

South Korea’s former First Lady, Kim Keon Hee, has been handed a seven-year sentence for taking bribes during and after her husband President Yoon Suk Yeol’s time in office.

Kim was found guilty of accepting jewellery, an expensive designer handbag and other luxury items in exchange for political favours by the Seoul Central District Court on Friday.

“She exercised her power as first lady to offer jobs and business favours,” lead judge Cho Sun-pyo said, adding that she received the bribes “without hesitation”.

Kim was fined 64.8 million won ($42,000) and the court ordered the confiscation of the items she received.

She denied the charges, saying the gifts weren’t bribes and her lawyers said she will appeal

The court found that she received jewellery worth over 100 million won ($64,750) from the owner of a construction company in exchange for giving his son-in-law a government job. A pastor also gave her a Dior bag and other gifts for favours relating to public officials’ duties, the Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper reported.

To support his bid for office, a former prosecutor gave her a painting by renowned artist Lee Ufan and the former head of the National Education Commission gave her a golden turtle ornament in exchange for being appointed to the position, the court found

Washington — The U.S. military says it hit Iranian targets on Friday over Iran's drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first American strikes on Iran since the two countries agreed to extend an already rickety ceasefire last week.

The strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities and radar sites, U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted to social media, calling it a "powerful response" to Iran's "dangerous behavior."

"The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire," CENTCOM said.A U.S. official told CBS News that American aircraft hit multiple targets along the Strait of Hormuz and on Iran's Qeshm Island. The strikes are now over, the official said.

One day earlier, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, a U.S. official confirmed to CBS News on Thursday. The ship's bridge was damaged, but no casualties or environmental impact were reported, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Centre, which said the vessel was off the coast of Oman
