New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's wife, Rama Duwaji, has drawn attention after reports that she traveled to Mallorca, Spain, instead of remaining in the U.S. during the country's 250th Independence Day celebrations.
According to reports, Duwaji traveled to attend a sold-out Islamic "spiritual wellness" retreat, where she is listed as an artist-in-residence. The retreat focuses on art, botanical workshops, and spiritual reflection inspired by themes from the Quran. She is also scheduled to participate in a second retreat in Corsica, France.
The trip has sparked political debate, with critics arguing that the mayor's spouse should have participated in such a significant national celebration. Others have defended her decision, saying she is a private citizen and free to attend personal or professional events abroad.
The controversy has also revived discussion about Duwaji's past social media posts, some of which previously drew criticism before being deleted. She has apologized for several of those posts in the past.
