SHE’S TERRIFIED OF MEN BEING IN THE ROOM WHEN SHE DIES.
Christa Pike’s attorneys are asking Tennessee to use an all-female ex*****on team when she is scheduled to be executed on September 30.
Her lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, argued that having male officers restrain Pike could increase the risk of pain and suffering and potentially violate her constitutional protections.
Why?
Her attorneys say Pike has a history of severe childhood sexual abuse.
They argue that being restrained and physically handled by men during an ex*****on could trigger that trauma in her final moments.
Pike is now 50.
She has spent nearly 30 years on Tennessee’s death row after being convicted in the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
Her attorneys are also challenging Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol, arguing that a rare blood disorder could make the procedure especially painful.
And her clemency petition asks Gov. Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life without parole.
If the ex*****on goes forward as scheduled, Pike would become the first woman Tennessee has executed since 1819.
After nearly three decades waiting for death, her attorneys are now fighting over something most people will never have to think about:
Who will be touching her during the final minutes of her life?
