🚨 Scam Alert in Merced County 🚨

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam callers pretending to be a Sheriff’s Lieutenant and demanding money for supposed bond releases.

Deputies say scammers may spoof phone numbers to make the call look legitimate and pressure people into acting quickly. The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that legitimate staff will never demand payment over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and report it through an official law enforcement phone number. Do not give personal or financial information to anyone demanding urgent payment.

Have you or someone you know received one of these calls?

Deputies say Deputy Norris was patrolling near Volta Road and Pioneer Road around 10:44 p.m. on June 13 when he saw a vehicle parked along the canal bank and heard multiple gunshots. A 27-year-old man, identified by the sheriff’s office as Felipe De Jesus Reyes Vargas, was detained, and deputies later recovered an unregistered G***k semi-automatic handgun with a 30-round large-capacity magazine.

Vargas was booked into the Merced County Jail on firearm-related charges and resisting arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

A&E Crime + Investigation has revisited the Paul Allen Perez case, a California cold case that began after an infant’s remains were found in Conway Slough east of Woodland in 2007. Investigators later identified five infant victims in the case, including two children who were born in Merced: Kato Allen Perez and Mika Alena Perez.

Perez was convicted earlier this year in the deaths of several of his infant children. DNA evidence played a major role in helping investigators connect the case years after the first discovery. The case has drawn statewide attention because of the number of victims, the age of the children and the long cold case investigation that followed.

Los Banos CHP says a speeding stop led to a DUI arrest after officers noticed signs and symptoms of impairment during the traffic stop. 🚔

According to CHP, the driver was arrested for DUI and several drug-related charges after officers found a large bag of fentanyl pills and other suspected drugs inside the vehicle. CHP did not identify the driver or provide the exact location of the stop in the post.

Speeding, impaired driving and fentanyl on the road are a dangerous combination. What do you think needs to happen to get more impaired drivers off local roads?

👏 UC Merced-affiliated researchers Theodore C. Masters-Waage, Maritza Gaytan and Christiane Spitzmueller are part of a new Nature Human Behaviour correspondence reexamining claims about gender bias in scientific awards.

The research looks at whether awards named after men are less likely to be awarded to women. The new analysis does not say gender disparities in science recognition are gone. Instead, it argues that the relationship between award names and award recipients appears weaker after accounting for time, the structure of the data and additional controls.

Why does this matter? 🧪🏆 Scientific awards can influence careers, promotions, reputations and who gets recognized as a leader in their field. The UC Merced-linked work adds an important layer to a larger debate over how academic honors are measured, interpreted and awarded.

🎣 That is not just a big fish — that is a MONSTER.

Roger George Guide Service reported a trophy catch at San Luis Reservoir after Los Banos angler Darren Batty landed a 42.5-inch, 30-pound striped bass during a slow bite on the main lake.

The striper put up a fight, stripping line before it was brought to the boat, recorded and safely released. According to Roger George, the fish was a new personal best for Darren and one of those catches anglers do not forget.

San Luis Reservoir fishing may be rated slow right now, but this monster striper proves the big ones are still out there. 🎣🔥
