NATIONAL POINSETTIA DAY
December 12

Something to consider after receiving or purchasing a poinsettia.

A Holiday Plant Worth Saving?

Poinsettias make a beautiful holiday gift but after Christmas, many of us just toss them, non-recyclable pot and all.
Have you ever wished you could save a particularly beautiful Poinsettia, let it grow larger and rebloom again next year?
Starting with a healthy plant will improve your odds. Ditch the foil pot covering that comes with the plant as soon as you get it. Foil does not drain and encourages root rot. The roots like to be moist not wet. An attractive holiday cache pot, a pot without a drainage hole, that you can use every year is a good alternative. A properly sized cache pot should hold the plant off the bottom. After watering, empty any excess water. Keep the plant away from furnace vents as they don’t like drying heat or drafts. Poinsettias like bright indirect light.
If you’re up for the challenge of making your Poinsettia rebloom in time for next Christmas, here’s a step-by-step guide based on our local holidays.
Derby Day - Cut back stems to 6-8 inches above the soil line. Repot into a one-size larger pot.
Memorial Day - Move the Plant outside. Acclimate the plant to the outdoors by placing it in a shady, protected area for 2 or 3 days, then gradually expose it to longer periods of direct sun.
July 4th - Pinch back the stems to encourage branching (more blooms). Fertilize weekly and keep moist.
State Fair Starts - Pinch back again. Fertilize weekly and keep moist.
Labor Day - Bring plant indoors to sunny location at 65ºF to 75ºF.
Columbus/Native Peoples’ Day - Initiate “short day”conditions by providing 14 hours of TOTAL DARKNESS. Small amounts of light, such as turning on a lamp, a streetlight, car headlights, or the light from a TV can interfere with the production of blooms. Placing the plant in a tightly closed cardboard box may be the easiest way to achieve these conditions. Then just open the box near a bright window for the remaining 10 hours each day. Continue this cycle until you begin to see colored bracts appear.
Thanksgiving - Move to area with full day bright, indirect light.
Christmas - Enjoy!!!

Today, some members of the Crescent Hill Garden Club visited The Idlewild Butterfly Farm. If you have not been there - get your entomology geek on and go!
This wonderful business is part natural history museum, part exotic insects’ containment lab and very much about the raising and feeding of butterflies. What’s more they have a wonderful gift shop. It’s at 1100 Logan Street diagonal from The Logan Street Market.
Entomologist Blair Leano-Helvey and her staff took us on an extensive educational tour of the lives of the insects - the beautiful and the unnerving!
If you enjoy being a little startled by a hand-size insect and then being calmed down by the sight of fluttering Swallow Tail wings, this is the place for you.

Gateway Urns Refurbished

Back in 2005 The Crescent Hill Garden Club installed two 68 inch high cast-iron urns at the gateway to the neighborhood at Grinstead Drive at Interstate 64. Longtime Crescent Hill resident, the late Martha Elson wrote at the time in her Heads Up column for the Courier Journal, “The club ordered the new reproductions of classical urns - costing a total of $3,000 and weighing about 750 pounds each - from Architectural Salvage on East Broadway. The club bought them with proceeds from garden tours, and they are meant to reflect the neighborhood’s historic character, club member Judy Gogan said.” The article included a photo of Judy standing next to the urns.
Eighteen years later the urns were really showing their age.
They were bolted into concrete pads and are too heavy to move.
Any work on them would have to be done in situ.
Now their refurbished surfaces can be enjoyed by passersby.
The new finishes were applied by painters Jason Skaggs, Nathan Skaggs and artist Monica Mahoney. First Jason cleaned, sanded and repaired Then a copper colored, rust and weather resistant paint was applied. Lastly using a pigment with a verdigris patina, artist Monica Mahoney highlighted the details of the urns. THE URNS HAVE BEEN RESTORED! Quite a challenging job. The results should last 15 years. Our thanks go out to Jason, Nathan, and Monica for their fine work.
The result is lovely and will be enjoyed by the community for many years. This is another example of the garden club using the proceeds from our garden tours to benefit the community.
Please support us by attending our garden tour, the 1st Saturday in June.
