Years back when Marquee partners Tommy Johns & Mike Thompson first started working together, they began reaching out specifically to local artists in Louisville who they believed they could create amazing visuals with.
The second collaboration, with Mike writing/directing and Tommy as the DP, was for Louisville hip hop artist Sloe Pink on his track ‘Tofu_Cherry_K0la’, an ode to the concept of knowing your truths and speaking those truths out loud.
The opening sample in the track, which is featured throughout, is that of a young girl giving a bible reading spoke to Mike when creating the concept.
‘It just had this kind of ominous tone to it. It’s this young girl speaking these huge concepts of religion with an even larger amount of conviction, but it’s hard to fathom the idea of such a young child being able to comprehend what she’s saying. Then we landed on the idea of Sloe being this sleazy false prophet in what looks like a bad AA meeting who is baiting his followers into this disgusting sacrament of tofu and cherry cola, only to be left for dead and penniless by the end. I’m laughing even recounting this because it seemed so absurd for a hip-hop video but it just worked. One of my favorites for sure.’
