Woman avoids jail time after pleading guilty in fatal south Louisville homicide

A woman who entered a guilty plea in connection with a fatal shooting in south Louisville will not be incarcerated.

Stephanie Hill, a resident of Hardin County, pleaded guilty to charges of reckless homicide, evidence tampering, and drug offenses on Wednesday.

In July 2024, Ms. Hill was involved in the shooting death of Renata Veljacic, 29, in the 8000 block of Glimmer Way.

As part of the plea agreement, Ms. Hill was facing a potential 7-year prison sentence; however, the judge instead imposed five years of probation. The judge indicated that Ms. Hill poses a low risk of re-offending if she receives treatment for her addiction.

Judge Annie O'Connell stated, "Corrections is not the best place for her to receive treatment. There are multiple, multiple excellent programs in this community that will be more individually suited and tailored to Ms. Hill's specific needs."

Ms. Hill is required to report to a recovery center on Thursday and will undergo monitoring for a period of 90 days.

Should she violate the terms of her probation, she could face a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
