Louisville Area Skeptics

Louisville Area Skeptics Like science? Think pseudoscience like homeopathy is woo? You might be a skeptic! Scientific skeptics value critical thinking skills and the scientific method.

Twitter: Our meetups will often include Skeptics in the Pub, an informal social event designed to promote fellowship and social networking among skeptics, critical-thinkers, and anyone interested in science. It provides an opportunity to talk and share ideas in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. But most importantly, it's about having fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rational

ity. In addition to the fun and fellowship, we'll often host Science Cafes, with lively presentations from scientists, philosophers, researchers, and others who are passionate about the scientific outlook. Topics of discussion at a typical Louisville Area Skeptics meetup might include science, acupuncture, psychology, immunizations, superstitions, climate change, cryptozoology, paranormal phenomena, nutrition myths, archaeology, forensics, homeopathy, evolution, logic and logical fallacies, magic, chiropractic, astronomy, UFOs, optical illusions, media coverage of science, or pseudoscience. If you are a fan of the works of Carl Sagan, Phil Plait, James Randi, Michael Shermer, Joe Nickell, Orac, the Skeptics Guide to the Universe, Brian Dunning, and/or Benjamin Radford, then you've found your people!

“COVID-19 has reawakened America’s spirit of misdirected anxiety, inspiring businesses and families to obsess over risk-reduction rituals that make us feel safer but don’t actually do much to reduce risk—even as more dangerous activities are still allowed. This is hygiene theater.”

People are power scrubbing their way to a false sense of security.

“I wonder how mask refusers would react if their surgeon wanted to perform major surgery on them without wearing a mask. Can you imagine the reaction if a surgeon said, “This is America and I am free to not wear a mask in surgery if I don’t feel like it!””

Masks have been proven to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but instead of believing the evidence and following public health guidelines, many people have turned mask wearing into a political statement. They are refusing to wear masks for reasons that are laughable. Rejecting masks is selfish: it means...

An increasingly dire problem

The White House coronavirus task force has been out of public view as President Donald Trump has shown an urgency to move past the pandemic, downplay recent surges in Covid cases in some states, and get Americans back to work.

Tuesday! Aug 21, 6:30pm at Big Four Burgers in Jeff.

Join us for August Science Cafe featuring Dr. Brian Barnes and his talk "How Can Critical Thinking Help Me?"

What are some things that make something “critical thinking” instead of just “thinking”? How can I learn about my own thinking? What’s the value of doing that? In this small workshop, you’ll learn to think about your own thinking in even better ways than you’re already doing it.

Brian will give you some exercises you can do with yourselves or with others anytime, anywhere, that can help you get to the heart of the thinking you’re actually doing. He will also show you where there could be risks and hazards to good thinking.

These tools are for thinkers of any age, and they work even better in groups. Bring your closest thinkers and learn what’s possible with authentic critical thinking tools.

The Schedule

6:30 pm: Arrive and order.
7:00 to 7:30 Eat and chat.
7:30 pm: The presentation begins. The presentation and a Q&A session will last from 7:30 to approximately 8:30pm.

The Cost

Free and open to the public, but donations are gratefully accepted, to help defray the speaker's gift and meal, and the meetup.com fee.

The Venue

We will be in the upstairs room of Big Four Burgers and Beer at 134 Spring Street in Jeffersonville, IN. There is a large unpaved parking area in the back, and there is street parking. Or, if the weather is nice and you are up for it, you could park in Louisville and walk across the Big 4 bridge!

The Guest Speaker

Dr. Brian Barnes holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Louisville. Barnes is a veteran of the US Army, along with other non-academic careers, and currently teaches face-to-face and online classes at several universities in traditional philosophy topics, along with courses in sustainability, critical thinking, and Japanese sword practice. He has co-authored articles examining critical thinking strategies and tactics for the National Teaching and Learning Forum and is the author of the textbook, The Central Question: Critical Engagement with Business Ethics (2013). Barnes co-hosts the weekly radio show, Critical Thinking for Everyone!, on 106.5 Forward Radio in Louisville, and he also created the critical thinking comic book series, Adventures in Critical Thinking. Dr. Barnes is a Scholar of the Foundation for Critical Thinking, and was a direct student of Dr. Richard Paul.

See you there!
