In recognition of Black History Month, FCDP is honoring national, state and local leaders who have inspired us throughout the month.

Today, we honor former Congresswoman Julia May Carson. In 1996, Carson was elected as only the second African American woman to Congress from Indiana and was the first woman and first African American to represent Indianapolis in the U.S. Congress. Having previously served in the Indiana General Assembly and as the Trustee for Center Township, she was a fierce advocate for those in poverty. Her legislative record included leading Congress to award Rosa Parks the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999, cosponsored the removal of bureaucratic bottlenecks on child health insurance, fought for the revitalization of Indianapolis's Fall Creek Neighborhood and supported several transportation initiatives including a new terminal for the Indianapolis International Airport. Following her death in 2007, her grandson André Carson succeeded to her seat.

Do you have a suggestion of someone to honor? Message us or make a comment on one of our Black History Month Posts!
