St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, located at 2222 West Market, was formed among 600 German immigrants around 1869. By 1874, the church was completed (despite what Wiki says), and included a whisper to us above the doorway facing West Market:
St. Antonius Kirche
The saints name presented in Latin, the word for “church” in German: Kirche. Expand photo with red brick. Still there today.
By 1887, the church began construction of a school and sat a cornerstone in that year. 1887 dedication photo included in images.
In addition, a look of the church in the very early days byway of a postcard celebrating the church building’s 25th anniversary, Silver Jubilee, in 1899, available from this Louisville church, but written all in German.
My family were founding parishioners in 1869, lived four blocks away that year and on. My GG Grandfather, Christian Gramig (1821-1899), was a church representative as Board VP, in 1874, for the St Joseph’s German Catholic Orphanage. He was buried from St Anthony’s in 1899, the year of the postcard. Another looking glass for us today, to see what our family did, so many years ago on that day.
The church suffered a fire in 1939 such that the roof line of yesterday, does not match today. The congregation folded years back but the building remains!
