es, the Louisville Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) helped organize to bring LPFM radio to Louisville with the launch of Forward Radio, WFMP-LP, Louisville, Kentucky, 106.5fm and forwardradio.org in 2017. In 2021, we became fully independent as a registered non-profit "WFMP Low Power Radio, Inc." We seek progressive citizen journalists and radio producers to help get new voices on the air - issues, perspectives, and communities that you won't hear elsewhere on the dial. We are listener-supported and rely not only on volunteer power, but your financial support to stay on air. We also seek local businesses and non-profit organizations that are interested in becoming underwriters. Together we can preserve this precious space in Louisville's media landscape to amplify independent people's voices, free from corporate, government, or big-money interests. It only costs $20/day to keep us on-air. Please consider sponsoring a day, week, or month of broadcasting today!

It’s all about re-gifting for good this week on Sustainability Now!, as your host, Justin Mog, is in conversation with Logan Sowell, a Business Development Executive with a national nonprofit called Human-I-T that takes organizations’ e-waste and securely refurbishes and repurposes the retired tech. They then get that refurbished tech into the hands of low-income families, disaster survivors, veterans, and students; and they even hook up the device recipients with internet access and digital skills training. Human-I-T was founded in 2012 and employs 170. https://soundcloud.com/wfmp-forward-radio/sustainability-now-logan-sowell-human-i-t-12-9-25

On our latest episode of 'Bench Talk: The Week in Science': A fossil previously thought to be a juvenile 'Tyrannosaurus rex' turns out to be a new dinosaur species called 'Nanotyrannus'. A rare cross between a 'Blue Jay' and a 'Green Jay' appears to have occurred naturally in Texas, yielding a 'Grue Jay'. Satellite imagery for estimating the number of people living in rural areas appears to be significantly underestimating population sizes. An exciting assortment of planets, stars, constellations, and meteor showers can be seen in the night sky this month. And significant declines in K-12 school attendance since immigration raids (by ICE) in California and Virginia were initiated. Plus, a satirical song by mathematician/musician Tom Lehrer about commercialization of Christmas. Below is the Apple podcast link. Other ways to listen are in the Comment section below:

We continue our float down the Ohio River this week on Sustainability Now!, as your host, Justin Mog, paddles along with three guests who are all actively involved in advocating for the passage of the Ohio River Restoration Program Act (H.R. 5966): Forest Clevenger, Executive Director of The Ohio River Way; Michael Washburn, Executive Director of the Kentucky Waterways Alliance; and David Wicks, Board Chair of River City Paddle Sports. The Ohio River Basin, spanning 55 congressional districts across 15 states, is the nation’s largest body of water to receive no dedicated federal funding. In mid-November, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) led introduction of the Ohio River Restoration Program Act with Reps. Erin Houchin (IN-09), Chris Deluzio (PA-17), Emilia Sykes (OH-13), Mike Rulli (OH-06), and Mark Messmer (IN-08) to fund the economic and environmental restoration of the Ohio River.

The bipartisan coalition of Members represents districts throughout the Ohio River Basin, which serves as a source of drinking water for more than 25 million Americans, and its ecosystem is vital to local economies and industries, generating more than 500,000 jobs and $21 billion in wages.

Nationwide, more than a third of the United States’ waterborne commerce travels through the Ohio River – $43 billion in commodities annually – yet the Ohio River is still the nation’s largest body of water without any dedicated federal funding. The bill would dedicate up to $350 million in federal investments to the large-scale restoration of the Ohio River Basin, using initiatives similar to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which resulted in more than $3 in return on every federal dollar invested in the program.

Have you seen the 1999 movie 'The Matrix'? Is it possible that humanity could actually be trapped in a simulated universe created by intelligent machines? Physicists recently weighed in on this question, and its discussed on this week's episode of 'Bench Talk: The Week in Science'. And do you know about the phenomenon called 'earth wind' that blows charged ions from our atmosphere to the moon? We also discuss new research on how fast dinosaurs actually walked, and about killer whales (Orcas) in the wild who offer gifts to humans. This week's show features the fun, toe-tapping music of Tom Lehrer, renown mathematician/musician/comedian who delighted audiences worldwide with his rendition of 'The Elements'. Tom passed away in July at the age of 97, but leaves behind an exuberant songbook for us to enjoy. We play three of his songs on this episode! Below is a link on iApple podcasts. This week on Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, catches up with a local journalism legend, Marcus Green, former reporter at WDRB and the Courier-Journal, now striking out as an independent consultant as Principal at Greenlight Projects LLC. Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/wfmp-forward-radio/sustainability-now-marcus-green-greenlight-projects-local-journalism-11-10-25
Marcus Green is an Emmy-award winning former journalist who spent more than 25 years reporting on Louisville, southern Indiana and Kentucky. In 12 years writing on the newspaper's business and city desks, he covered small business, agriculture, the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industries, the Ohio River Bridges Project, the KFC Yum! He left WDRB last month to launch Greenlight Projects LLC, a startup consulting firm.

Listen in as we discuss the state of local journalism and how it's changed, as well as some of the issues Marcus covered that dealt with sustainability -- like the Ohio River Bridges Project, the Bernheim pipeline/bypass, Urban Government Center, and others. Marcus and Justin reconnected in October at the Ohio River Confluence summit. They discuss this inspiring moment for the future of the Ohio River Basin, last week’s UPS flight disaster at the Louisville airport, and the upcoming I-65 closure.
