Over the weekend I introduced my longtime friend Ed Morris and Bob Shannonhouse to Sugar. We went on a long rambling hunt in some rolling hill country in Metcalfe County. Sugar was tired from a long hunt the day before and the hunt started slow because the squirrels weren’t active and we had an interruption from a feral dog.

Around 3:00 the sun peeked through the clouds and the squirrels started rambling and feeding. Sugar kicked into high gear and treed 16 times over the next 2 hours. The guys made some great shots on long range squirrels that took off running as we approached the dog where she was treed.
Right after the photo session at the end of the hunt, Sugar flopped down for an impromptu and well deserved nap. She’s a real trooper for a young dog !!!

Just before Christmas, my buddy Jeff Spainhour helped me on a mentor hunt with my grandson, Cole.
Up until then, Cole had shot all his squirrels with a .22 rifle. With the squirrel rut in full swing and the possibility of multiple squirrels that start running when the shooting starts, it was time to put the little man in the game with a shotgun. He did well for his first time, knocking 3 of the eight squirrels we bagged out to his little buddy, Sugar.
Hunting with kids and dogs is sooooo much fun!!!!

Today was a very special day in the woods for me and Sugar, for a whole lot of reasons. We were hunting with my lifelong friend Stuart Ray and his son Parker. It was like deja vu because I mentored Stuart as a young man as well as Parker.

Both of them hunted with my previous dog, Foxie, but this was their first outing with Sugar. The squirrels were on fire and she was too! She treed 15 times; several dived into holes but we had numerous doubles, and ended up with 3 big fox squirrels and 5 grays.

It was a rough hunt in steep hill country, but thanks to Parker’s young, strong legs and good shooting at running squirrels in tall timber, it was a very memorable hunt!

Cory Storch, my buddy from Florida, and I just had a great afternoon hunt with one of my “Brothers from another Mother”, former 3rd District Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Tony Brown.

Sugar treed 11 times and we ended up with six gray squirrels. Special note to my fellow squirrel hunters, the gray squirrels are definitely starting to rut! We’ve had multiple squirrels in the same tree a couple of times this week, and Cory and Sugar and I have had a blast!!!!!

My buddy Cory Storch is visiting here from Florida this week to hunt squirrels with me and Sugar. I mentored Cory in the outdoors as a youth, and he has matured into a fine all-around Sportsman. He has mirrored my early years spent in the military and as a firefighter, and he just finished his stint as an Army Paratrooper and is now a full time Fireman/ EMT in Florida .

Obviously the weather threw us a real curveball the last several days, but yesterday we decided to hit the woods despite cold temperatures and sharp gusty winds. As the result of a gracious invite, we hooked up with my frequent hunting partner Larry Villines down in Webster County, since the western part of the state didn’t have snow cover.

With the weather stacked against us, the first part of the afternoon hunt was slow. Sugar only treed twice in the first hour and a half, and both squirrels dived into holes. The last two hours the wind slacked a bit, and my little dog really revved up as squirrels finally started moving.

Sugar is only in her second full season, so it was gratifying to see her stay focused despite the less than perfect conditions. We ended the day with 8 squirrels, including two doubles. The most revealing part of her continuing development was a squirrel she treed in a thicket with small trees where we couldn’t spot the squirrel despite numerous attempts. She refused to leave the tree so we went back and spotted a small clump of leaves in the fork of one of the saplings. When Larry tugged on a vine the squirrel squirted out and he shot it.

Those are the kind of moments that tell you you’ve got a good dog!

Our friend Julie Jenkins brought her son-in-law Ben, who is a Park Ranger in Alaska, and her 3 year old grandson Fritz, who loves dogs,to visit with Sugar. It was an absolute hoot!! Things got so rambunctious in all the chasing and fun interactions that Sugar knocked over her food bowl.

I was a little hesitant when Fritz started trying to help at the food bowl, because lots of dogs won’t tolerate that. West Siberian Liaka’s like Sugar are known to bond with and be gentle with children, and we have acclimated her as a house dog and hunting companion. Laikas are one of the oldest breeds of dogs that were revered by the primitive nomadic hunters in Siberia as companions that put food on the table and protected their owners.

It was precious watching the two of them interact!!!

I put my West Siberian Laika pup, Sugar, in the timber for the first time today. She’s only in her second year, but last season when she was less than a year old, my friends and I shot 126 squirrels out to her despite lots of snow and ice that kept us out of the woods.

She didn’t disappoint! She treed 12 times in a short hunt, and my hunting partner, Greg Brunsman and I were able to put 7 in the bag. I love hunting with and training dogs, it’s a very rewarding way to put game on the table.

I’m like a little kid looking forward to Christmas… anticipating the rest of the season in the woods with my little buddy!

With Kentucky’s early duck season kick off looming and the regular season close behind, there has been a lot of conversation about harvest numbers in recent years.

Each year, there seem to be fewer ducks and more blinds left empty. Stories of slow mornings, dry sloughs, lack of managed public resources, and optimistic hunts ending with empty straps and game bags are becoming standard duck talk. Whether the cause is habitat loss, shifting migration patterns, weather volatility, increasing pressure, or a combination of all these factors, hunters are concerned. The majority of hunters feel like we’re trending in the wrong direction.

So where does that leave Kentucky waterfowling? Is this simply another cyclical downturn we’ll ride out, or are we witnessing a longer-term change in duck distribution and behavior? Are weather patterns reshaping traditional flyways? Are we losing critical habitat faster than we can improve it? Or is it just the ebb and flow of hunting, amplified by the expectations built on seasons past?

These are the questions worth asking, and we will be doing a live call-in waterfowl show Sunday night from 6 to 8 pm with Scott Vance, Southeastern Director for Delta Waterfowl, to help provide some answers.

Hunters across the state care deeply about the resource and the future of Kentucky waterfowling. What do you think is driving the decline so many of us are witnessing, and what do you believe the future holds for Kentucky duck hunting? To join the conversation call us at 502-571-8484 or Toll Free at 1-800-444-8484.

Listen live at 840 WHAS or on the IHeart radio app!

Special thanks to Nathan Killen for the great duck photo!!!
