With Kentucky’s early duck season kick off looming and the regular season close behind, there has been a lot of conversation about harvest numbers in recent years.

Each year, there seem to be fewer ducks and more blinds left empty. Stories of slow mornings, dry sloughs, lack of managed public resources, and optimistic hunts ending with clean straps are becoming standard duck talk. Whether the cause is habitat loss, shifting migration patterns, weather volatility, increasing pressure, or a combination of all these factors, hunters are concerned. The majority of hunters feel like we’re trending in the wrong direction.

So where does that leave Kentucky waterfowling? Is this simply another cyclical downturn we’ll ride out, or are we witnessing a longer-term change in duck distribution and behavior? Are weather patterns reshaping traditional flyways? Are we losing critical habitat faster than we can improve it? Or is it just the ebb and flow of hunting, amplified by the expectations built on seasons past?

These are the questions worth asking, and we will be doing a live call-in waterfowl show Sunday night from 6 to 8 pm with Scott Vance, Southeastern Director for Delta Waterfowl, to help provide some answers.

Hunters across the state care deeply about the resource and the future of Kentucky waterfowling. What do you think is driving the decline so many of us are witnessing, and what do you believe the future holds for Kentucky duck hunting? We’ve turned the page to the month I’ve always affectionately referred to as “ROCTOBER”. It’s the transitional month where fall starts to accelerate all kinds of outdoor opportunities. Deer become more active as forest foods and farm crops become available and fish start to gorge to put on fat for the winter.

With Kentucky’s youth and muzzleloader deer seasons right around the corner and fish activity revving up, on tonight’s show Scott and I will break it all down to help you capitalize on one of the best months to be outdoors! We’ll also be glad to answer any of your questions. The numbers to call are 502-571-8484 or toll free 1-800-444-8484.

Just got back from a memorable and picturesque trip to Canada with my lifelong friend and former Chairman of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Stuart Ray. Canada has a special place in my memory file, and this trip was an another special addition.

We were grouse hunting in Canadian bush country that was ablaze with the fall colors only God can create. Watching Stuart’s coal black English Lab, Braxton, plunge in and out of the blaze orange and chartreuse colored brush while hunting and retrieving birds was nothing short of spectacular! With a mixture of the serenity of Canadian sunsets on the lake, great camaraderie and grouse breasts for dinner every night, it doesn’t get much better!

On last nights radio show our featured guest was Jason Lupardus, turkey biologist and CEO of Turkey’s for Tomorrow. We discussed a KDFWR turkey hunter survey which led to discussions of a one gobbler limit in Kentucky, west of Interstate 65. Unfortunately the survey was biased and flawed and led hunters to believe that reducing the limit would produce more turkeys.
On the show we revealed that the ENTIRE Southeastern group of turkey biologists said it was biased and flawed as well. Furthermore, several other states have previously reduced limits with little or no effect on harvest rates. Fortunately, because of a turkey working group held at KDFWR where these facts were revealed, the Department has decided to withdraw the proposal and discuss other management strategies at the quarterly commission meeting this Friday.
We went on to discuss some ideas and several measures that could have tremendous impact on the future management of Kentucky’s turkey flock.

My buddy Jeff Spainhour and I had a pretty good dove shoot the other day. It was great to be out in the field again! However, doves have been very scarce on most of the fields I manage and in the region. Overall, it’s been one of my most disappointing seasons.

I believe it’s due to the highly unusual cold weather fronts that swept through during the last two weeks of August which pushed the birds out.

What are you folks experiencing and can you please share what county are you shooting from please?
