“There is not a more dangerous tendency in history than that of representing the past as if it were a rational whole and dictated by clearly defined interest.” – Thomas Merton

Did you know that Kentucky did not abolish slavery when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863?

The Emancipation Proclamation only applied to Confederate states in rebellion, not to border states like Kentucky, which remained in the Union. So, enslaved people in Kentucky remained legally enslaved until December 18, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified and officially abolished slavery across the entire United States.

However, freedom didn’t come instantly or equally. In some areas of Kentucky, enslaved people were informed earlier, either by Union soldiers, through self-emancipation, or by word of mouth, while others remained in bo***ge even after the war ended in April 1865. In fact, Kentucky did not ratify the 13th Amendment—which abolished slavery—until 1976, more than 110 years after it became law.

We continue the work in Kentucky to uplift the names and stories of those who were enslaved here. Their stories are important today and every day!
