Via a 218-214 vote Mike Johnson and House Republicans passed the Senate version of the "Big B***y Bill" with two Republicans: Rep. Thomas Massie (KY D-4) and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA D-1), joining all 212 present Democrats in voting against Trump's tax and spending bill.
The bill now heads to President Donald Trump’s desk for his final signature. Trump has already indicated a signing ceremony will occur on July 4th; a self imposed deadline for the enactment of the bill.
The “Big Beautiful Bill” permanently extends the 2017 tax cuts which will cost the federal government trillions of dollars in revenue. To offset the lost revenue, drastic cuts have been made to Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits. Which will lead to upwards of 17 million people losing healthcare coverage, the closure of hundreds of rural hospitals across the country, and upwards of 8 million people - mostly seniors and children - losing SNAP benefits and access to affordable food.
Additionally, Trump’s bill allocates $45bn for ICE detention facilities, $14bn for deportations, and billions of dollars to hire 10,000 new agents by 2029. An additional $50bn will go towards the border wall and other fortifications.
