A good rule of thumb is to have your photos in 3 places (perhaps one is "the cloud"), and on at least 2 separate devices (a computer, an external hard drive, an USB, or on disks). Here is an explanation of what "the cloud" means, and a pitch of several services (no endorsement intended).
