Lovell Volleyball opens home season with strong wins

BY STORMY JAMESON
The Lovell High School volleyball team continued its hot start to the season last week, picking up two non-conference victories over Greybull and Columbus.
On Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs hosted their first home match of the year against Greybull. Despite some nerves, Lovell pulled off a sweep, winning in three straight sets.
“As a team we had 33 kills and 13 aces,” head coach Tera Kostelecky said. “Although we would like to see our serving percentage be around 93–95%, we did fair with 85% serving. We also ended the night with 28 digs and 3 blocks.”
Coach Kostelecky noted that, while the team is still working on running its high-tempo offense, the athletes are showing growth each match.
On Saturday, Lovell hosted Columbus, Montana, in another tight battle. This time, the Lady Bulldogs won in four sets, extending their early-season momentum.
“We have played Columbus numerous times over the past couple of years, and it seems we always go point for point with them,” Kostelecky said. “They are a good, competitive team, and I was proud of how our girls rose to the challenge.”
Lovell's improved serve-receive helped set the tone, giving them opportunities to showcase their quicker offense. The Lady Bulldogs finished the match with 40 kills, 18 aces, 7 blocks and a strong defensive effort highlighted by numerous digs.
Lovell now holds a 10-1 record on the season, though they have yet to face a conference opponent. This week, Lovell travels to Rawlins for one of the team’s favorite tournaments, which will feature top-tier competition from across the state.
“This is one of the tournaments we look forward to every year,” Kostelecky said. “It’s a lot of volleyball in two days, and it really shows us where we stand compared to some of the best teams in 3A. We’re excited to see how we match up.”
The Bulldogs will open pool play against Rawlins, Pinedale and Newcastle, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the Gold Bracket and the bottom two moving into the Silver Bracket for both JV and varsity competition.
“With a 10-1 start, I’m proud of the direction we’re headed,” Kostelecky added. “The girls are working hard, and I believe we’re just scratching the surface of what this team can accomplish.”
