Happy birthday to Mark Donahue, Soundmirror’s chief engineer and true jack of all trades.

When he’s not recording, mixing, or mastering music, Mark is busy building studios, fixing things, rewiring rooms, organizing gear, and doing whatever needs to be done behind the scenes.

Here’s to a great year ahead—thanks for all that you do, Mark!

In March 2023, Dirk and Mark immersed themselves in an intensive week recording Requiem: Mozart’s Death in Words and Music with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, and the tenors and basses of the Westminster Choir.

For this dynamic interpretation, Maestro Manfred Honeck reimagined Mozart’s iconic piece by weaving narrative text throughout the score, and it's brought to life by the narration of Academy Award® winner F. Murray Abraham, with full orchestra, chorus of 100, four soloists, and antiphonal men's choir singing Gregorian chant.

The capturing of Mozart's final masterpiece live in concert proved an epic undertaking. The size and scale of the forces are difficult to convey, but the recording was made with Surround Sound and 3D immersive Dolby Atmos in mind, to give the listener the closest experience to being in Heinz Hall for the performance.

We are deeply grateful for this inspiring collaboration and excited to share it with the world!

The recording is available NOW, in stereo and immersive, on your favorite streaming platforms; SACD will be available this fall.

Our technical engineer Easton uncovered archival gold this time:

✨A 2010 Boston Symphony Orchestra recording featuring violinist Hilary Hahn
✨ Toronto Symphony Orchestra
✨ The Revels
✨ Living Stereo ("Do Not Erase!")
✨ Patty Larkin
✨ A real find: Nicki French's 1995 recording of Total Eclipse of the Heart

Can't wait to see what else you find, Easton!

What happens when two audio engineers meet up in Cleveland? A trip to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame quickly turns into a lengthy discussion about the excessive volume of the exhibits and the overuse of subwoofers.

Mark had a great time geeking out with his old friend and mentor Larry Rock—audio director of the New York Philharmonic and truly one of the best (and nicest) in the business.

When you travel with your own seating.

Mark and Blanton had a terrific time last week recording the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. A privilege to capture their beautiful voices in such a beautiful part of the country. Can't wait to share the music we made—more posts to come!

🎉 Congratulations to John Newton on His Retirement! 🎉

After more than five decades of capturing the sound of classical music, John Newton is retiring from Soundmirror—the company he founded in 1972 with a vision that revolutionized recording.

John’s ear, integrity, and pursuit of excellence have set the gold standard in the industry. More than an audio engineer, John has been a leader and a mentor in the world of sound recording, building a team and a company defined by its innovation, and an ethos of science advancing art. His influence can also be heard not only in the music, but in the generations of engineers and producers he has taught and inspired.

John’s vision placed him at the forefront of technological innovation in audio. Over the years, he collaborated with pioneering companies and technologies—Dolby Labs, Soundstream, Lexicon Opus/Sonic Solutions, Sony, Philips, Merging Technologies, and more—whose innovations form the foundation of nearly every tool used in music production today.

We are humbled that John has entrusted us with the legacy of Soundmirror and hope we can continue that legacy for years to come.

John, thank you for everything you’ve built. We wish you the very best in this next chapter—you've more than earned it.

-Mark, Blanton, Dirk, Lexi, and Anastasia

Soundmirror, the Next Generation?

This year, we’ve been lucky to have not one, but two fantastic summer hires on our team!

Easton, a computer engineering major UMass Lowell, jumped right into projects to keep our tech running smoothly and Noel—our chief engineer Mark Donahue’s son—got a front-row seat to the world of recording, helping out in the studio and learning the ropes from his dad.

We’re so grateful for their energy, curiosity, and contributions over the past few months.

Easton will stay on part-time this fall, while Noel will head back to high school in a few weeks. Thanks for all your hard work, guys!

🎙️Last week, Mark and Blanton were in the legendary Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory for a piano and voice recording.

With its stunning acoustics and historic charm, Jordan Hall is one of our favorite places in the world to record. Truly a privilege to work in this iconic Boston space.

🎧 Did you know we also record audiobooks?

This week, our engineer Anastasia Lukina recorded the narration for part 1 of a trilogy about the life of Mary Baker Eddy, the author and founder of Christian Science.

Recording of the full trilogy will continue through December.

✈️ Believe it or not, this is what our chief engineer Mark Donahue calls "traveling light." A decade ago, he'd bring 2000 lbs of gear; now it's under 500.

"But gate agents still avert their eyes whenever I'm next in line," says Mark.

He and Blanton are off to record the Santa Fe Desert Chorale in beautiful New Mexico this week.
