Re: Kidnapping, Re: Elizabeth Smart

Wanda Barzee, the Utah woman convicted of helping her husband kidnap Elizabeth Smart in 2003, will be released today. Smart says she fears for herself and the public.

"Yeah, I am very concerned – for the community, for the public, as much as I am for myself."

Wanda Barzee, 72, pleaded guilty to kidnapping in 2003 and was sentenced to concurrent, 15-year sentences. Her husband, 64-year-old Brian David Mitchell, was sentenced to life without parole.

Re: , Re: , Re: National Security

The White House has just released the memo written by Rep. Devin Nunes to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence detailing complaints about the investigation into ties between the 2016 campaign of President Trump and the Russian government. The memo, now declassified, is attached.

Highlights of the memo include:

• admission that the investigation began with George Papadopoulos well before the release of the Steele Dossier

• the already known fact that Steele was eventually paid by the Democratic National Committee, although the initial commission of the dossier's creation was a Republican opposition research group, which the memo does not name

Re: Libya, Re: Human Rights

A recent video punished by CNN depicted Africans in being sold as slaves for as little as $400 USD. The public outcry has resulted in the country of Rwanda offering to accept 30,000 refugees from Libya. In its statement, the foreign ministry of recalls its own refugee crisis following a 1994 genocide by Hutu extremists.

Libya's government has been in a state of flux since the death of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. A parliamentary election in 2014 has been ignored by the previous administration. Various militias control different parts of the country.

A recent report showed African migrants being sold “like cattle” for as little as $400 at auctions in Libya.

Re: , Re: World News

A group of U.S. State Department officials have formally accused Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of violating a federal law designed to stop foreign militaries from enlisting child soldiers.

A State Department “dissent” memo said Tillerson breached the Child Soldiers Prevention Act when he decided in June to exclude Iraq, Myanmar, and Afghanistan from a U.S. list of offenders in the use of child soldiers despite the department publicly acknowledging that children were being conscripted in those countries.

Foreign militaries on the list are prohibited from receiving aid, training and weapons from Washington unless the White House issues a waiver based on U.S. “national interest.”

A group of about a dozen U.S. State Department officials have taken the unusual step of formally accusing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of violating a federal law designed to stop foreign militaries from enlisting child soldiers, according to internal government documents reviewed by Reuters.

Robert has resigned as president of Zimbabwe with immediate effect after 37 years in power, the speaker of the country’s parliament has said.

The move ends an eight day crisis, which started when the military took over last week in order to block the rise to power of Mugabe’s wife and her faction within the ruling Zanu-PF party then developed into a popular revolt against Mugabe.

Re: , Re:

Over a year ago, the data leak exposed offshore holdings of global elites. The release of that information led to resignations of political leaders around the world. Now, another leak is exposing more people using offshore holdings as tax havens. Called the Paradise Papers, this data was received by German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung (the same outlet that received the Panama leak.)

Explicitly named in the leak is US commerce secretary . According to ICIJ, the organization that has been analyzing the data, Ross "has used a chain of Cayman Islands entities to maintain a financial stake in Navigator Holdings, a shipping company whose top clients include the Kremlin-linked energy firm Sibur. Among Sibur’s key owners are Kirill Shamalov, Putin’s son-in-law, and Gennady Timchenko, a billionaire the U.S. government sanctioned in 2014 because of his links to Putin."

A new leak of confidential records reveals the financial hideaways of iconic brands and power brokers across the political spectrum.

Daphne Caruana Galizia, the journalist who worked extensively on the release of the report which exposed shell corporations and money laundering by high-ranking members of governments around the world, has been killed in a car bomb.

The Panama Papers report led to the resignations of both Iceland and Pakistan's prime ministers. The founders of the financial firm at the center of the report, Mossack Fonseca, have been detained in Panama on money laundering charges.

"A three-judge panel in San Antonio unanimously ruled that Texas must address violations that could affect the configuration of House districts in four counties, where lawmakers diluted the strength of voters of color. In some cases, the court found mapdrawers intentionally undercut minority voting power "to ensure Anglo control" of legislative districts."

Federal judges on Thursday found fault with some of the state’s 150 state House districts, which must now be redrawn ahead of the 2018 elections.

Economies, regardless of policy or alignment, appear to all experience the same instances. The author of this piece, as well as us here at Re:Sourc News, find this assumption to be true even for the once heralded example of conservative economics, Texas.

Re:

ousted it's first female president yesterday in a move by its highest courts. This unprecedented action comes after weeks of protest and an investigation into an election scandal. Park had shifted the nation's policies on the DPRK from one of engagement to hostility, which caused 1000s to protest for the sake of peace with the North.

This sudden shift in national leadership however, could prove dangerous in the wake of recent DPRK threats and military growth.
