Three months ago, one of my students sent me a message

She’s not special. She’s not more talented than you. She just learned the right things in the right order from someone who’d already done it

That’s what happens when you stop guessing and start following a proven system. You go from struggling to fully booked faster than you thought possible

You can be the most talented lash artist in your city, but if you're letting clients walk all over you, you're going to burn out. And fast

I used to say yes to everyone. Late clients, last-minute cancellations, people who didn't follow aftercare and then blamed me for bad retention. I thought that's just what you had to deal with as a lash artist

But the moment I set clear boundaries, required deposits, and started pre-qualifying my clients, my entire business changed. I started working with people who respected my time, followed my policies, and were genuinely excited to be there

Your boundaries train your clients how to treat you. If you don't have any, you're going to attract chaos

Someone needs to say this: becoming a lash educator before you're a great lash artist is killing this industry

I see it constantly. A lash artist takes a weekend course, gets handed a done-for-you teaching template, and suddenly they're selling lash training. The pitch is always the same: "Make more money teaching than doing lashes."

But here's the problem. If you haven't mastered retention, if you're still figuring out client experience, if you haven't built real business systems, what are you actually teaching? You're passing on half-formed knowledge to students who trust you to guide them

Those students struggle. They blame themselves. Some quit. Others become educators too, and the cycle continues

I didn't start teaching until I had my TDLR Specialty License, years of experience, and a proven track record of helping lash artists build sustainable businesses. My students get $500+ days and booked-out calendars because I've actually achieved what I'm teaching

If you want to educate one day, I respect that. But become exceptional at lashing first. The industry needs fewer rushed educators and more artists who've mastered their craft

I see it all the time. Lash artists charging $80 for a full set that takes three hours. They're exhausted, their back hurts, and they're doing six sets a day just to pay bills. They tell themselves once they get better or more experienced, they'll raise prices

But here's what actually happens. You burn out. You start resenting clients. You lose confidence because you're working so hard for so little. Eventually, you either quit or you stay stuck in this painful cycle

Undercharging attracts clients who don't value you. They cancel last minute. They haggle. They complain. And you accept it because you think that's all you deserve

When my students finally raise their prices, everything changes. They work less but earn more. They attract clients who respect their time and expertise. Their confidence comes back because they're finally being paid what they're worth

Your pricing isn't just a number. It's a statement about how you value yourself and your work

And right now, you're telling the world you're not worth much

For so long I thought clients weren’t coming back because I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t likable enough. I took it so personally

Then I learned about proper isolation, adhesive application, and aftercare education. I learned that retention isn’t just about skill. It’s about teaching your clients how to take care of their lashes so they actually last

The moment I fixed my retention, my rebooking rate skyrocketed. Clients started referring their friends. My calendar filled up without me having to beg for bookings on social media

Bad retention will kill your lash business faster than bad marketing ever will. Because you can attract all the new clients in the world, but if they’re not coming back, you’re just running on a hamster wheel

If your clients aren’t rebooking, it’s not personal. It’s technical. And it’s fixable

I wouldn’t wait to charge premium prices. I’d start high from day one because I know my worth now

I wouldn’t take every client who messaged me. I’d be selective from the beginning and only work with people who respect my time, my policies, and my craft

I wouldn’t stay quiet on social media out of fear. I’d show up consistently, share my process, and let my work speak for itself

And I wouldn’t try to do it alone. I’d invest in mentorship, community, and education immediately because trying to figure it all out by yourself is the slowest, most exhausting path

The biggest mistake I made when I started my lash business back in 2018 was undervaluing myself and overworking to compensate. If I could go back, I’d tell myself: charge more, work less, and build a brand people remember

You don’t need 10K followers to be fully booked. You need 50 loyal clients who keep coming back every three weeks and refer their friends. That’s it

I’ve seen lash artists with 800 followers making $8K a month because their retention is incredible and their clients are obsessed with them

Meanwhile, artists with 15K followers are struggling to fill their calendar because they’re focused on vanity metrics instead of actual business fundamentals

Stop chasing followers. Start chasing retention, referrals, and raving reviews. That’s what builds a sustainable lash business

Your content should attract your ideal client, not just anyone
