🎻Everyday Hispanic Hero: Leonel Garza 🎻

From the heart of South Texas—“El Valle,” Mercedes, TX—Leonel Garza’s journey began with a violin and a dream. He dove into the world of mariachi just before middle school, and that passion carried him through his undergraduate studies at UTB in Brownsville, where he played with the UTB Symphony, Mariachi, and Mariachi Valle Real.
In 2015, Leo moved to Lubbock to pursue graduate studies at Texas Tech University, earning not one but two master’s degrees—in Music Education and Violin Performance. Though he nearly stepped away from mariachi to focus on classical music, his calling pulled him back.
As Director of Orchestras at Coronado High School, Leo not only sustained the orchestra program but also founded Mariachi Mesteño, which has proudly represented West Texas at the UIL State Mariachi Festival every year since its inception. He’s also found family in Mariachi Mi Tierra and now leads Mariachi Los Matadores at Texas Tech University.
But Leo’s impact goes far beyond music. Being Hispanic, he says, isn’t about what you represent—it’s about who you represent. His grandfather once pointed to the veins in his hands and said, “That’s blood. That’s my blood. Your blood. Our family’s blood. Eres puro Garza.” That legacy fuels Leo’s passion for mariachi—a way to connect families, traditions, and untold stories.
His advice to young Hispanics: “Understanding who you are is not a straight line. We make mistakes; we misrepresent; we forget. But the truth is always there—we just need the will to see it.” He encourages his students to grow beyond their circumstances, to be confident, successful, and proud of their roots.
What keeps him going? His families—his loved ones in South Texas, his Mariachi Mi Tierra crew, his students, mentors, fellow teachers, and the entire music-loving community. Every gig, every classroom moment, every cheer from the crowd reminds him why he does what he does.

Meet Rosa Maria Coy—a woman whose life is a living testament to faith, love, and service. As the second oldest in a family of twelve, a devoted wife, and a loving mother of three sons, Rosa has always put others first.
She may not be a celebrity, but her impact is profound. Whether she's delivering meals to a sick friend, typing up the San Ramon Catholic Church bulletin, or simply searching for new ways to serve, Rosa lives with purpose. Even in the midst of her husband’s cancer treatments, she continues to show up for her family, her church, and her community.
Rosa retired from Southwestern Bell years ago, but her calendar is still full of kindness. She’s not perfect, but she’s a perfect example of what it means to live a life of faith in action.
Thank you, Rosa, for inspiring us all to do more, love deeper, and serve with joy. 💖

👠✨ When you hear high heels echo through the halls of Dillman Elementary, you know Mrs. Letti Tovar is on the move — leading with heart, grace, and unstoppable energy.
Born and raised in Muleshoe, Texas, Letti grew up in a humble home with four siblings, a hardworking agricultural father, and a devoted mother. From dancing ballet folklórico as a child to graduating top of her class, Letti has always embraced her roots and risen with purpose.
Now principal of Dillman Elementary, a proud wife, and mom of three active kids (you’ll find her at every little league game with a Dr. Pepper in hand!), Letti is a mentor to Latinas, a champion of education, and a pillar of her community.
She and her husband host the annual "Double Shoe Classic Car Show" to raise funds for Snack Pak 4 Kids, helping feed hundreds of families across West Texas. She serves on church councils, supports every nonprofit in town, and even delivers meals weekly for Meals on Wheels.
Letti Tovar is proof that Everyday heroes walk among us — in high heels, with humility, and with a heart full of love for her family, her culture, and her community. 💖

Meet Lino DeLeon - Born and raised on a 40,000-acre cattle ranch in Falfurrias, Texas, Lino learned early what it meant to work hard and care deeply. That ranch wasn’t just home, it was a lifeline for immigrants passing through. Though his family didn’t have much, they never let anyone leave hungry or thirsty. Compassion was the rule, not the exception.
At 24, he stepped into the oilfields of Post, Texas, then spent 10 years in Zapata building a life and career. When his wife’s health declined, he moved to Lubbock to be by her side. For the past 18 years, he’s been a proud member of the Lubbock-Cooper ISD team, serving as Assistant Supervisor of Grounds. From manicured lawns to pristine turf fields, his work speaks volumes—but it’s his quiet leadership that leaves the biggest mark.
He encourages young Hispanics to pursue education, reminding them: “It’s something no one can take away from you. It’s knowledge that will get you through so much—from jobs to family to finances to being part of your community.”
When life gets tough, it’s his faith that carries him. It’s not just something he believes—it’s something he lives, every single day. If he could be remembered for one thing, it would be this: “That I made a difference in one person’s life.” And maybe… for his legendary BBQ.
