Keeping your birds happy and well fed is the secret to getting good eggs 💁🏻♀️🥚
Our chickens are homestead raised from the hatchery, to the brooder, to the coop and run, and free ranging the yard. We’ve stayed on top of their nutrition since they were only a few days old 🐥
In case it isn’t obvious, I’m this kind of chicken tender 💖🐥🌽 not this kind 🍗🍽️👩🏻🍳
Our chickens are basically big babies that lay eggs and provide a great source of entertainment and joy 🤩 Our flock consists of Mystic Onyx, Easter Eggers, and Lavender Orpingtons. (👀 soon you’ll be seeing Sapphire Gems, Welsummers, and Ermine Ameraucanas)
A healthy diet is SO important to keeping hens happy and laying well. We obviously like DuMor feeds 😂🤷🏻♀️ We chose the 17% all flock because it is a complete feed that is calcium fortified, has pre and probiotics, and is made with 17% protein to not only help with egg laying but also to keep our rooster and ducks happy. The Grit is free choice, meaning the chickens eat it when they feel like they need it - they’re really intuitive that way - and it is to help the chickens break down their food and have better digestion since it is also formulated with probiotics. The Oyster Shell is also free choice and it’s a great source of calcium to help them produce strong and healthy egg shells.
OBVIOUSLY the chickens get treats too! Dried mealworms, corn, peas, watermelon, sunflower seeds, raisins, and other fruits and vegetables make excellent treats for the ladies. We also often mix in fresh and dried oregano which acts as a natural antibiotic and boosts their immune system while the crushed red pepper flakes, paprika, and cinnamon support gut health and can act as a natural dewormer and deterrent for mites.
As for keeping our birds happy we try to give them plenty of time to free range in the yard outside of their run. Getting to explore, peck and scratch at the dirt, and munch on whatever bugs and worms they find in the grass is the absolute best part of their day.
In my humble opinion, raising birds on a homestead isn’t just about getting eggs; it’s about getting to know your chickens, loving on them, giving them treats, and giving them space to just get to be chickens 🥰
