I had the privilege of filming a birth recently that I’ll never forget.

This mama had gone a little over a week past her due date, so I was basically on standby waiting for the call. One day the midwife texted me and said, “Today might be the day.” I stayed ready… but the whole day went by and I didn’t hear anything. When I checked in later, it turned out it was just early labor and she was resting at home.

The next day I finally got the call. The midwife said, “You better head this way.” I grabbed my gear and started the hour-and-a-half drive to the birth center. About halfway there, my phone rang again. They had checked her and realized she still wasn’t very far along, so they sent her home to rest.

So… I turned around and went back home.

Then the next morning the midwife called again and said, “Today’s the day. The baby will probably come this afternoon.”

Back in the car I went.

When I arrived at the birth center, she had been laboring for a long time already and was working through contractions in the tub. This was truly a marathon birth. Watching her was incredible. She was tired, you could see that, but she just kept going. The resilience and endurance of this woman was amazing to witness. It was one of those moments where you just think, wow… the power of a woman.

Her husband was right there beside her the whole time, encouraging her and supporting her through every step.

After a couple hours of filming, it finally came time to push. And then the story suddenly took a scary turn.

The baby was born, and there was that moment of excitement — You did it! But then we realized something wasn’t right.

The baby wasn’t crying.

The room went very quiet.

The midwife immediately began working on the baby, performing neonatal resuscitation while mom and dad spoke to their baby and encouraged him. There was a heartbeat, but still no cry.

Those moments felt like forever.

And then finally… the baby let out his first scream.

The whole room filled with relief.

Soon he was resting safely on his mother’s chest, and the family was together. It was such a beautiful moment after such a long and intense journey.

Birth is powerful. It shows the strength, resilience, and determination of mothers in a way that’s hard to put into words. I’m always honored when families trust me to capture moments like this.

This one was definitely a unique and unforgettable experience for me behind the camera.

She Was in a Coma… and Her Body Still Gave Birth.

I was talking with an incredible midwife when she shared a story I still can’t stop thinking about.

A pregnant woman was unconscious due to a medical emergency — and yet her body still labored and gave birth on its own. No guidance. No pushing. Just physiology.

It’s a powerful reminder of how deeply the body knows what to do when it’s given space and trust.

This mother was just a few days past her due date. It was Thanksgiving. She spent the day celebrating with her family—already a mom of two—unaware that later that night, labor would gently begin. As contractions started, she chose rest. Knowing how important energy would be, she labored quietly through the night and let her husband sleep.

Around 5:30 a.m., she called her midwife and said, “I think it’s time.”
The midwife then called me the filmmaker.

I grabbed my gear and headed out. The parents arrived at the birthing center just before 7 a.m. I walked in moments later, cameras rolling by about 7:05 am. She went straight to the bathroom and labored on the toilet—focused, calm, steady.

At around 7:10 a.m., her baby was born.

No rush. No panic. No chaos.
Just a midwife catching a baby girl and gently placing her into her mother’s arms.

The environment was incredibly peaceful. The mother was composed and present. There was no drama—only quiet strength. Afterward, they moved to the bed, where the family settled in together. The midwives continued their care—checking vitals, weighing and measuring the baby, footprints, herbal baths—everything done unhurried and with intention.

Later that morning, her children and mother arrived to meet the newest member of the family. By around 10 a.m., the family was dressed, rested, and ready to go home—to spend the rest of the day together, welcoming this baby into their lives.

This birth was fast. It was gentle. And it was deeply beautiful.

As a filmmaker, I’ve witnessed a handful of births—but this one stood out for its calm, its simplicity, and the confidence in the space. It’s a powerful example of what birth at a birthing center can look like when everything progresses normally and care is rooted in trust.

"It’s dangerous for them. It’s lonely for them."

Midwife Betsy shares a sobering look at the reality of maternity care in Texas today. As OBs and maternity wards become less prevalent in rural areas, families in places of Texas are being forced to travel hours out of their county just to find a provider.

We can’t put a hospital in every county, but we can support the qualified midwives who are willing to serve these communities. Everyone deserves birth options, regardless of where they live.
