Quail populations across Texas have been plummeting for decades.

But now, a Texas Tech researcher and his team may have turned that trend around with the invention of a medicated wildlife feed that’s already been approved by the FDA and is now commercially available.

Texas Tech’s own Ronald Kendall received the 2025 Texas Environmental Excellence award from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality last month, following his research into wildlife toxicology over quail.

Texas is the only continental state on its own independent power grid, a statewide system most people use to get power to their homes and businesses.

“Those types of systems are becoming more vulnerable as population grows and climate changes,” explains Dr. Brian Ancell. “So right now, things are great, water and power are maybe relatively affordable, but they’re always there. But in the future, natural disasters are expected to increase, population growth, the grid might not be able to handle that.”

Ancell is an atmospheric scientist with the Home Utility Management System, a Texas Tech project which would allow individual homes to use water and energy collected on the property.

We Are Public Media

Texas Tech Public Media is proud to serve as the PBS and NPR stations for Lubbock, Texas and the surrounding area. As a nonprofit media organization, our goal is to be a town square - dedicated to sharing the diverse voices of the City of Lubbock and Texas Tech University, while remaining objective in all of our reporting.

We must stay true to those ideas to keep the trust of our communities. It is our duty to shine a light on structural inequities that exist in our society, and to tell the stories of those who for too long have not been given a platform.
