Who decides fishing seasons, catch limits and how many fish anglers can keep?

Trevor Moncrief, Director of Marine Fisheries with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and Dr. Marcus Drymon, Associate Extension Professor at Mississippi State University and Marine Fisheries Specialist with Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant, join Brown Water Banter to explain the foundations of fisheries management.

They break down how science, monitoring, regulations and input from anglers come together to guide fisheries decisions along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It’s a straightforward look at how managers work to protect healthy fish populations while maintaining opportunities for recreational and commercial fishermen.

🎣 How fisheries data is collected and used
📊 What goes into management decisions
🌊 The roles of state and federal agencies
🗣️ Why participation from anglers matters
⚖️ Balancing conservation with access to the resource

Whether you fish the Mississippi Sound, offshore reefs or anywhere along the Gulf Coast, this conversation will help you better understand how fisheries management works—and why the decisions are often more complicated than they appear.
