Thought Of The Day (Friday 1/18): “Frugal” should be my middle name. My wife probably would say it should be “cheap.” Our opinions differ like that. In our home, we use products until they wear out. We drive our cars for more than 10 years or for more than 200,000 miles. We’ve had the same artificial Christmas tree for nearly 20 years, having paid for itself many times over. I’ve worn some shirts for 25 years now. Recently, reluctantly, I had a funeral for a pair of corduroy trousers. These trousers were a Christmas gift from my wife’s parents in 1997. Not just any ol’ pair of corduroys. Well broken-in. Wide wales. Pleated. Perfect. Except, you could read a book through the seat. So, giving in to the wife’s wishes, that old friend is in the rag pile waiting to begin a new life cleaning our house. I’m Carrington Thompson, manager of the station here — glad to be frugal (or cheap) and sad to part with a wonderful pair of wide-wale, pleated corduroys — and this is my Thought Of The Day.

Thought Of The Day (Thursday 1/17): One Christmas, our young daughter received a tent as a gift. When she received it, her mom and I promised that she could camp out in the back yard. Weeks came, weeks went. We finally picked a weekend to camp in the back yard and – of course – the weather didn’t cooperate. So what did our daughter and I do? On Friday night, we pitched the tent in the family room and camped. No wimpy tent, this. It’s a three-person tent, about seven by seven feet, that pretty much crowds out everything else on the family room floor. On T-V, we watched science shows, like Dr. Oakley Yukon Vet. Our view was excellent because the tent door was nearly slammed against the T-V screen. We read ghost stories…in the tent…including the Brown Mountain Lights of North Carolina, which I’ve seen and can attest to their eerie existence. We made s’mores and ate them…in the tent. We had so much fun on Friday night, we camped out in the family room again Saturday night. It was a great Double-D weekend: a dad and daughter weekend….in the tent. I’m Carrington Thompson, manager of the station here — looking forward to another Double-D weekend, in the tent, on the family room floor — and this is my Thought Of The Day.

Thought Of The Day (Wednesday 1/16): Have you ever felt disgruntled, disgusted, or dismayed? Have you ever looked disheveled or unkempt? At times, all of us probably have. But have you ever felt gruntled, gusted, or mayed? Have you ever looked sheveled or kempt? Our English language contains words that appear to have no positive, opposite word, even though their spelling – such as disgruntled - suggests they have a negative prefix plus a root word. It turns out that “gruntle” is an obsolete word that means “complain.” “Disgust” is from a French word “degouster”, meaning “to have a distaste for.” “Dismayed”? That comes from a French word for “frighten.” “Disheveled” comes from an Old French word that means to “disarrange the hair.” Similarly, “unkempt” comes from an Old English word that means “to comb” the hair, plus the prefix “un”. I’m Carrington Thompson, manager of the station here — today feeling gruntled, gusted, mayed, sheveled, and kempt — and this is my Thought Of The Day.
