"Know your food, know your farmers, know your kitchen" - Joel Salatin

What are we advocating for when we are talking about eating local? We are advocating for a deeper understanding of the kind of nutrient dense food your body needs to be healthy. We are advocating for a deeper understanding of where your food is grown, how it is grown, by whom is it grown, when it should be grown, and what kind of impact it is making on the world (ecologically, economically, socially). We are advocating for a deeper understanding of how to prepare your food, how to process your own food: canning, fermenting, and more.

We are advocating for taking time to attend to lost knowledge, wisdom, and skills. We are advocating for renewing relationships that have become broken, and are in danger of being forgotten - relationships with your neighbor, with the land, with your own body.

Gaining this kind of knowledge and reviving these kind of local relationships and skills is a journey. Will you join us?

We have Virginia Peach returning for the first time this year! We bought a bunch of delicious local peaches from Gross Orchard in Bedford! We then infuse peach reduction and plenty of peaches into sweet cream, for our Virginia Peach flavor! Be sure to check out Gross Orchard for a huge selection of local fruits and produce!

I was checking a report this weekend and it looks like we surpassed 1000 loaves sold at some point this past month. Might not seem like a lot to some but it’s humbling to me that we get to do the work we do to feed the community and support millers and farmers here in the Mid-Atlantic.

Spice library! What a cool idea!

If you are subscribed to our monthly newsletter or have been to the Bedford Library this week, you will have heard about/seen our new addition - The Bedford Spice Library!

What is a spice library?
Have you ever wanted to make a new recipe with an unusual or exotic spice that you don't normally keep in your pantry? Are you tired of buying large, expensive containers of spices or herbs when a recipe only calls for a teaspoon or a tablespoon? That's where the spice library comes in! Now you can stop by the Bedford Central Library and take home a sample packet of different spices to try at home.

How It Works
- We currently have 45 different Spices, Spice Blends, and Herbs available (including several types of Chili Pepper, Coriander, Curry Powder, Marjoram, Ras El Hanout, Saffron, Turmeric, Zaatar, and more!)
- Available ONLY to Bedford County Library cardholders.
- Each household can borrow up to 5 sample packets/teaspoons per week.
- Spices are FREE, but donations will be accepted and appreciated.
- Please see a staff member at the desk for the sample packets or more information.

In the future, we plan to offer recipe suggestions for each herb/spice and will highlight different spices or cuisines monthly.

We've had a few false starts but it's time for the Lynchburg region to finally get what it deserves: a food guide that celebrates all the incredible local food that is grown, raised, and made right here in the best part of Virginia.

We've been dreaming of creating a local food guide for the Lynchburg, Virginia region (Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell County) ever since Land and Table was started over a decade ago. More details to come, but we have a goal of launching a basic website this fall. We're working with a website developer and are excited to finally make finding local food (grown, raised, and made) simple and easy. We hope you are as excited as we are.
