Did you grow up taking school field trips into the pitch-black tunnels of Lynn Woods, or were you normal? 🔦👀
Most people outside the North Shore have no idea that Lynn Woods hides one of the wildest pirate legends in New England. In 1658, a pirate named Thomas Veal allegedly escaped capture by hiding deep inside a cavern with his crew’s stolen treasure. Legend says an earthquake that same year caused massive boulders to collapse, trapping Veal—and the gold—inside forever. ⛏️🪙
Fast-forward nearly 200 years to the 1850s: a man named Hiram Marble bought the land, claiming spirits were communicating with him through clairvoyants and revealing the treasure's location. For over 30 years, Marble and his son chipped away at solid granite by hand, carving out the eerie 135-foot tunnel and stone staircase we can still walk down today. 🕯️👻
