Rice County Council on Aging Celebrates Completion of New Vehicle Storage Facility In March 2020, representatives from the Rice County Council on Aging traveled to Topeka for Transit Day at the Capitol, where they learned that the organization had been awarded a federal Access, Innovation & Collaboration Award to construct a Vehicle Storage Facility. The grant application had been submitted by the Rice County Council on Aging, a nonprofit organization serving the transportation needs of Rice County and surrounding communities.
Executive Director Alice Prester and Transportation Director Alecia Gaines were present when the award recipients were announced. After six years of planning, funding, and construction, the new facility is now complete.
The community is invited to celebrate this milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Representatives from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will be in attendance, along with members of the Lyons Chamber of Commerce and community residents.
The new Vehicle Storage Facility is located at 213 E. 4th Street, at the corner of Highway 14 and 4th Street in Lyons.
The completion of the facility marks a significant investment in the future of public transportation services and will help ensure that vehicles serving seniors, individuals with disabilities, and rural residents are protected and maintained for years to come.
The project was constructed by Galyon Construction of Little River, Kansas, whose work brought the long-envisioned facility to completion.
