2026 Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Lyons. Thanks to all who provided for a wonderful celebration once again, especially event organizer Abril Rodriguez !

Congratulations to the Lyons High School girls and boys wrestling team for a great season and stellar showing at this year's Kansas Wrestling Championships in Hays. Jace Grizzle led the way with the Lions first state championship in 34 years. Xander Youg placed third and Easton Benavidez and Marius Lee placed fifth. Also wrestling for the Lions were Jordan Gomez and Landon Lewis.

The Lions placed sixth in team standings.

On the girls side, Kennedy Grizzle placed third for the second consecutive season and Sterling High School students Jacynn Boeken and Addison Morgan each placed fourth. Both girls wrestled for the Lady Lions during the regular season. also wrestling for the Lady Lions were Taylor Baxter, Mia Pulley and Carsyn Winger.

Lyons has much to look forward to as all but Kennedy and Easton will be competing for LHS during the regular seaon in 2026-27.

Recently there has been a series of books published on the history of Mexican American baseball/softball in Kansas and Missouri. Rod Martinez, a native of Newton and a co-author of some of the books, will be coming to Lyons on July 13 for the purpose of collecting photos, newspaper clippings and personal recollections of Mexican American baseball/softball in Lyons from the 1930s and 40s to the present time.

All information collected will be used in a new book to be published in 2025 highlighting the two sports in small Kansas towns and will feature a chapter on Lyons. The game of baseball/softball played a big part of the lives of Mexican Americans in Lyons since the early part of the 20th century and it was especially useful in integrating two entirely different cultures into the city I am proud to call home.

If you have any photos, newspaper clippings or personal accounts please consider attending the meeting on July 13 or contact me at the Lyons News or on messenger. Mexican-Anglo relationships were strong in fortifyng the friendships between both cultures as is evidenced by the B & W team of the 60s that was formed and was quite successful.
