Our last update was on Saturday and we briefed over a possible snowfall for the SE Michigan region this Friday. There isn't much moisture with this system, but temperatures will be hovering in the teens. We will be dealing with snowfall ratios of 20:1 to 30:1 through the entire system.

With that said, most models are in general agreement of 2 to 4 inches of snow. This will be an extremely light snow over a prolonged period.

Also, this will not be too good for the roads either. When temperatures are that low the salt isn't as effective.

As always, updates to come.

There are some early indications that we may see a plow-able amount of snow next Friday morning. The 12z GFS and last night's 00z Euro have agreed that it will be cold (lower 20s) and the system will hit SE Michigan.

Since we are 140 hours away, there still will be changes to the forecast. We aren't going to be specific on estimates until Wednesday. Until then, here an auto generated snow map of the 12z GFS:

Here is what the talk has been about. Monday Evening/Tues Morning will be the coldest, where ground temperatures could reach 0 or below. If that isn't bad enough, there will be some wind (10 mph or so). That means wind chill will be between -10 and -20 over that night.

Lower Michigan, be prepared for some more arctic air to reach the area around the 20th of the month. The four days following will feature lows in the single digits and highs in the upper-teens. I wish I could at least report snow possibilities for the area, but the models aren't showing anything interesting just yet over the next 10 days.

The most recent guidance has held back on snow amounts. Look for mainly rain and a changeover to snow later on. Most snow will come as a coating on grassy areas. Locally higher amounts possible.

Also, watch out on the roads. As temperatures approach freezing and below, any standing water will freeze.

Here is one of the short range models and an explanation from another local weather page.

We are watching the secondary low pressure system that has developed and is moving to the northeast. With this secondary low, there is a chance for some accumulating snowfall, especially west of I75. The amount of cold air, and if we do get some dynamical cooling possibly will determine how much snowfall we get. In any case, this is a nowcasting event, and changes are always likely to happen, we either are going to get a few inches, or we might get nothing. Also, please be advised that temps will most likely fall below freezing, therefore creating very slippery conditions, be careful when driving. *Commute on Monday could be a bit tricky*...Stay tuned... Here is just one map showing what could happen....

There is a chance for snow tonight. This storm is a tough one to forecast because how much snow really depends on when the cold front arrives. Models show anything from 0.50 inches to 2.00 inches (3-inches locally). After 9PM the snow is expected to arrive for areas around Lansing and eastward. This certainly is a nowcast storm.

As of right now, my gut says around an inch of snow should be expected in lower Michigan. Locally higher amounts possible.

The weekend is almost here! Enjoy the 50 degree weather today and tomorrow. Sunday there is a slight chance we run into issues with mixed precip/ice. Look at the link attached. The blue area has a 50% shot at 0.10" accumulative ice. The rest of Michigan still are looking at issues with ice, however not as much.

1-8-2013 UPDATE: Expect the warm front to hit us early Friday morning. During that time frame, we will also be looking at a whole lot of rain. Then on Saturday, temperatures will sky rocket all the way to low to mid 50s. It will be short-lived though as we have a chance of snow come Monday.

**We are still looking into the snow possibility. We should have a better handle of the situation by the weekend.

01/06/2013

If you haven't already heard, we are in for a warm-up arriving late this upcoming Friday and through the weekend. It will be enough to melt the snowpack. In fact, we could see temperatures reach the low 50s during this timeframe.

01/06/2013

Heaviest swath of the system seems to be moving on through the northern burbs of Detroit. Snow is quickly accumulating on the paved areas, so drive safely. We could see up to an inch of snowfall after this is all said and done.

01/05/2013

A light snowfall has began falling over much of lower Michigan. Areas to the east should expect a dusting to a half-inch at most. Anyone west and north of Lansing has the best shot at hitting an inch accumulative snowfall throughout the night.
