Henry County Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett announced on Christmas Day the promotion of Dr. Shaquille O’Neal to Chief of Community Relations, elevating the nationally recognized public figure into an expanded public-safety leadership role focused on strengthening community trust through consistent, visible service.
Sheriff Scandrett said the promotion reflects his belief that public safety begins with public trust.
“When relationships are strong, communication improves, cooperation increases, and prevention becomes possible,” Scandrett said.
Dr. O’Neal has served as the Henry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Director of Community Relations for the past five years. During that time, the agency says it achieved its most significant five-year community engagement impact to date. Under his leadership, HCSO documented approximately 370 community events hosted or supported, 25,000 meals provided to local families through student-focused initiatives and the annual Thanks4Giving program, and 15,000 gifts distributed to children through the Shop with a Deputy holiday program and community partnerships. The agency also recorded more than 42,000 community interactions.
“These numbers reflect something bigger than outreach; they reflect access and trust,” Scandrett said. “Dr. O’Neal has helped our agency connect with people in a real way—showing up, listening, and serving with consistency. This promotion recognizes the impact he’s already made and positions the agency to expand that work countywide.”
HCSO leaders say Dr. O’Neal’s approach centers on direct engagement with youth and families through signature initiatives such as the Shaquille O’Neal Sports Spectacular Summer Camp, the Thanks4Giving holiday meal distributions, and community events like the Ride4Unity Cross County Bike Ride. The agency credits these efforts with strengthening relationships that support public safety outcomes, especially when timely information, responsive service, and collaboration are needed.
“Public safety works best when the community and law enforcement work together,” said Chief Shaquille O’Neal. “This role is about being present and creating opportunities for our youth and families. I’m honored to serve Henry County in this way.”
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office congratulated Chief O’Neal on his promotion and reaffirmed its commitment to public safety grounded in service, transparency, and partnership.
