Best part about decorating the Christmas tree each year is all the memories from Christmas Past. Jennifer and I collect Christmas ornaments when we travel, and we found this little guy last year when we saw a Christmas Carol at the The Old Vic Theatre in London. They literally drop Brussel sprouts from the ceiling on little parachutes! We saw this Santa sprout at the merch table and had to take him home. Love this little guy! He makes me laugh! Wishing you a joyous season with or without Brussel sprouts!

The History of Shadow Sound Studio: Then, Now, and the Shadows
Part 3: Dealing with Blindness - The Shadows
The studio business found me, but I realized early on that one of my primary obstacles as a blind person would be transportation. I thought that I should find a reason for people to come to me, and the studio would be an excellent way to do what I wanted to do and take away unnecessary stress by not having to travel as much. Keep in mind that when I made this decision, I was in my late teens. Now, of course, I travel all over the world and it’s no longer a problem.
I use shadows a lot in introducing the concept of blindness to sighted folks, and I’ve been using that brand since my first album, 'Take a Walk in the Shadows' and of course the name of the studio.
In reality, of course, there are no shadows when you’re totally blind, and contrary to popular belief, I do not walk in darkness. Rather, there is a complete absence of visual perception.
My wife, Jennifer, came up with a pretty great analogy that I like to use:
“She says that I have the same sense of sight with my eyes that a sighted person has with their elbow. It’s not dark, it’s just nothing (absent).”
We all have our limitations and we must recognize those limitations while never defining ourselves in terms of those limitations. Yes, I am a blind brain tumor survivor, but I am so much more, and so are you! Live the life you want by following your passion and you will be amazed at how worthwhile your life is to you and those around you!
Don’t be afraid to do what you are good at, what you were meant to do!

I’ve had the honor of producing and recording "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" twice for two different artists, and we invite you to listen to the second version by Joshua Neal, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (feat. Kim Meeks )." You will want to add this beautiful song to your Holiday playlist - Listen at link in comments.
We first worked together when I created the Macon Music CD Project highlighting the talents of Middle Georgia musicians over 2 compact discs in partnership with NewTown Macon. I introduced Joshua to Kim Meeks, another Macon Music artist, and together they performed an incredible version of the song.
Both versions were recorded, mixed and mastered at Shadow Sound Studio.
Version 1 by Tom Rule was shared Dec. 10.

The History of Shadow Sound Studio: Then, Now, and the Shadows
Part 2: The "Now" - A World-Class Studio
We are currently in a professional space in downtown Macon, Georgia. The journey from those two bouncing cassette decks to where we are now is wild. Now my studio has an in-line 96-channel Jade console, the latest in computer plug-ins and software, and hardware outboard gear from the best brands in the industry. That includes gear from Solid State Logic (SSL) , Neve, API, Universal Audio, and much more. We also have a mic locker full of incredible microphones from Neumann, Mojave Audio, Royer Labs, AKG, and many more.
We have the best of both worlds, the vibe of analog and the power of digital. The primary issue with tracking everything to the computer is that the accessibility for the blind for various DAWs and plug-ins comes and goes, but we make it work!
What is the one piece of legendary studio gear (Neve, SSL, API) you dream of tracking with? Let us know in the comments, and then send us a DM to make that dream a reality!

Some music stops you in your tracks.
I’ve had the honor of producing and recording "Oh Come Emmanuel" twice for two different artists, and we invite you to listen to this first version performed by my dear friend, bandmate, and Shadow Sound Studio session keyboardist Tom Rule. It still gets me every time.
Listen closely to the incredible tonal range he draws from a single baby grand piano. It’s stunning, deeply expressive, and one of those performances that reminds you why you do this in the first place. We’ll share the second version tomorrow. Have a listen at link in comments!

The History of Shadow Sound Studio: Then, Now, and the Shadows
Part 1: Then - The Humble Beginnings

Like most folks who get into this business, I started with primitive recording equipment in an attic room. In fact, my very first recordings were done with nothing but a boom box.

I graduated up to some basic live sound gear that I used for recording. Soon after, I cobbled together my original home studio. It consisted of an eight-channel Peavey mixing board, two cassette decks, AKG headphones, and about six or seven microphones from RadioShack including a truly good PZM microphone. I used those for a long time and got great results in ways that shouldn’t have worked, lol.

For a while, my recording technique was a total hack: bouncing! I would record stereo to one cassette deck, play that back, and record another part on top of it, bouncing it to the other cassette deck!

My next step in the home studio was acquiring the TASCAM Porta 424, a four-track cassette recorder. Several of us in the industry still remember those fondly!

The Gear Upgrade: Eventually, my home studio increased to two Yamaha NS 10 M speakers, the classic ones that aren't made anymore, which I still have, a 16-channel Peavey mixer, and a few more Shure microphones.

Going Pro (Reluctantly) I eventually moved into a real space in downtown Macon, Georgia, and started the studio where I was tracking with the Alesis ADAT and later the TASCAM DA-88s before finally being dragged into computer recording, kicking and screaming, in 2003.

I actually like the non-destructive editing, automation, and collaborative elements of digital technology, while of course preferring the character and vibe of analog gear, of which I have quite a bit.

Stay Tuned for Part 2 - "Now"
