Georgia’s colleges are bracing for the “enrollment cliff” — a steep drop in high school graduates starting next year. Their answer? Adult learners.

Programs like E.L. High School Academy in east Macon are preparing motivated students who didn’t follow a traditional path to graduation. Universities say these nontraditional learners are becoming essential to sustaining enrollment and strengthening communities.

At 92, George Clay stood before Macon-Bibb commissioners to share how firefighters saved his life after a horrific tractor accident in 1980. This week, he gave back — donating four acres of land so the county can build a new fire station.

Commissioners also approved a tax on Airbnb and Vrbo rentals expected to bring in $2.5 million a year, advanced plans for a jail expansion, and greenlit millions for roads and airport upgrades.

ACE defeated Central in a 35-0 blowout Monday thanks to rushing efforts from brothers Bryson and Brayden Vincent. The two teams finished the last three quarters of the game, which was halted after the first quarter back on Thursday because of lightning.
