Laws said he thinks he built a culture at Central across three seasons as the team's head coach.

“You share moments with kids where you know their darkest secrets that are going on at the house,” he said. “You’ve made sure that they’ve had food on their table and rides to school. It becomes deeper.”

The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank serves 24 counties around the region, but shelves once stacked to the ceiling with boxes of food now stand empty.

The food bank distributed more than 10 million pounds of food last year, but now lower levels of federal funding and fewer contributions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture are impacting the food bank's reach, said President and CEO Kathy McCollum
