Please read my appreciation for late Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox in my column for the Savannah Morning News & SavannahNow.com.

From his days as GM to filling out lineup cards in the dugout, Bobby Cox shaped Atlanta Braves baseball for over 40 years, writes Bill Shanks.

My personal Bobby Cox story. (Don't we all seem to have one?)

Once in the mid-2000s, I was at Shea Stadium. I was in the dugout before the game talking with one of the players. It was getting uncomfortably close to game time, and I knew I needed to get out of there. The player kept on talking. All of a sudden, here comes Bobby from the clubhouse into the dugout.

I thought I was going to be yelled at for being where I didn't need to be. And all of a sudden, he looked at me, and said, "Hey Shanksie!"

Well, I could have died. Bobby Cox gave ME, a dumb reporter, a nickname. Life could have ended right there. He gave me a nickname. He didn't care I was there. He probably knew I knew the player and that's why I was there.

Just like "Chip" or "Frenchy" or "Mac" or "Rochy," Bobby called me "Shanksie."

Half the time, I wasn't sure if he remembered my name, but he did that day. It's a memory I'll have forever.

Thank you, Bobby.

If you've ever met Bobby, or gotten an autograph from him, or had any interaction with him, why don't you post your story in a reply. We'd all like to hear them.

Please read my column in the Savannah Morning News & SavannahNow.com on former Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks owner Ted Turner, who died Wednesday at 87. https://www.savannahnow.com/story/sports/local/2026/05/07/ted-turner-left-indelible-mark-on-georgia-as-braves-hawks-owner-tbs-cnn-atlanta/89968707007/?taid=69fc69b216d54400015ac4a7&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter #

Even after his passing, Ted Turner's accomplishments in the sports realm are still felt around Georgia and the rest of the country to this day.

God Bless Ted Turner.

There is no way to truly articulate the impact that man had on the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and the Atlanta Braves and Hawks.

As a young fan, seeing him at games running up and down the aisles of Atlanta-Fulton Co. Stadium was always a thrill. Then when I started covering the team in the early-1990s, when Ted was around, it was always a treat. He loved that team and was good enough to step back and let Stan Kasten, Bobby Cox and Paul Snyder run the team and make it a champion.

He saved the Braves, who might have left if not for him buying the team in the mid-1970s. That's why Stan Kasten made sure the new stadium in 1996 was named "Turner Field."

The show "It's a Long Way to October" was filmed in 1982 and was way before its time. It was a behind-the-scenes look at the team with a team being seen in such a different way. The Braves happened to win the NL West that season. It was a great show.

WTBS (and before that Channel 17 WTCG) was SO much a part of the fabric of our state. Everybody watched The SuperStation. The Braves were on, Andy Griffith was on, the Flintstones, The Brady Bunch, etc. It was an unreal network. Academy Award theater on Sundays at 10:35. He hand-picked the movies he wanted to play. I watched WTBS more than anything else when I was a kid.

Heck, I named my radio station "The SuperStation" in honor of it.

When CNN started, it was tremendous - a TRUE news network. It's nothing like what it used to be, and he knew that. He knew it had changed over the years. I watched the day - June 1, 1980 - when he started CNN. They played the ceremony after a Braves Sunday afternoon game.

Not many more transformative people in the state of Georgia more than Ted.

I just wish he hadn't panicked in 1983 and traded Brett Butler. But he brought back Bobby Cox to be the GM of the Braves in October 1985, which is the most significant decision in the history of Georgia sports.

But he did find the money when Stan Kasten had to give the Utah Jazz $1 million dollars for some guy named Dominique Wilkins.

Thank you, Ted.
