Former Mayor passes over weekend
By Tyler A. Takeda
The Madera Tribune
Flags around the government offices of the City of Madera are flying at half mast this week to honor former Mayor Santos Garcia, who passed away over the weekend.
Garcia was found unresponsive at his home and his death was a medical emergency and was unexpected.
Garcia, a lifelong Madera resident began his political career after more than 30 years working with the U.S. Post office. He retired in 2015 as a letter carrier.
"That helped me raised my family," he said in an interview in 2021. "My wife Martha and I raised five children. Martha is an immigrant from Nicaragua. She came here to aspire to be a teacher. We raised a family who were all Coyotes and Alpha Elementary School students."
Garcia served District 5 on the basis of wanting to see the community get better.
