Do you feel tense and on edge? Are you someone who pushes their emotional experiences deep deep down, not wanting to go there with yourself? Does it feel like drowning while you can see everyone else around you breathing?

Holding onto trauma is exhausting, and our body feels it. Trauma often manifests in physiological discomfort and pain.

Whether you still maintain a relationship with your parent, but things are tense, you don’t get along, or you just don’t talk at all - You do NOT need anyone else’s permission or acceptance to establish the boundaries that protect you and your emotional health.

If you’re met with any unsolicited advice try this:

1. Remind yourself: I do not have to justify or over explain my boundaries to anyone, not even other family members.

2. Take on a researcher role: Be objective. Be curious about why this family member is pushing against your boundaries and notice that it’s probably about their own experiences NOT yours.

3. Ground yourself: Take 3 deep breaths, stay in the moment, and don’t jump to defending yourself (I know- SO hard!!)

4. Assert yourself: Say something like “I really enjoy spending time with you, but I’m not interested in having this conversation.” Or “This isn’t something that is open to debate, let’s talk about XYZ instead.”

Boundaries do NOT make you selfish, wrong, or hurtful. They establish the space between you and someone/something that allows you to take care of yourself and show up as your best self.

Just because someone is a parent, does not make them entitled to every part of you, including the parts they have hurt.

If you’re in your head, overthinking, and struggling to stay grounded, you may benefit from the app “I am” .

I recommend “I am” to most of my clients. It’s a FREE app that sends you daily notifications with positive affirmations.

The idea is that the notification will disrupt any negative thoughts you may be experiencing at that time and strengthen the part of your brain that looks at yourself and the world you navigate in a more balanced way.

I am not affiliated with the app in any way, I just truly believe it can be an extra support in disrupting the negative s**t we tell ourselves and improve our sense of self.

What is a consultation? And why should I do it?

Most therapists offer a FREE 15 minute phone consultation with potential clients.

What is this?

A phone consultation is an opportunity for you to interview your potential therapist! Let them know what’s going on in your life and what you’re looking for.

Here are some example questions to ask:

1. I’m coming to therapy for XYZ, do you have experience with this?

2. How can you help me with XYZ?

3. What can I expect sessions to look like?

Why should you take advantage of these consultations?

1. To see if your potential therapist can help you! Or maybe they have referrals for another great therapist who can!

2. As therapists, we know one of the biggest factors to determine client success in therapy, is the relationship they have with their therapist. If it’s not a good match, you’re gonna feel it, and in turn you probably won’t make much progress.

3. It SUCKS to start a relationship with a therapist, only to realize they don’t have what you’re looking for, leaving you possibly feeling lost and hopeless.

It’s an extra step, but one that can save A LOT of time, money, and mental energy.
