60 years ago, Nina Simone released “I Put a Spell on You.” This 6th studio LP (12th overall) by the 32-year-old jazz/soul/blues pianist, singer is considered one of her more “pop” outings; a few songs are covers of French pop tunes. The ‘cult classic’ title single, written and issued nine years prior by “Screamin’ Jay” Hawkins, reached Top 30 in the UK for Simone ( #120 USA) while this album just cracked the Billboard Top 100. Eight years ago, NPR ranked it the #3 Greatest Album Made by Women. More in Comments.

HPZ will not be heard this week, as I'll be slinging records once more at Lola's Madison this Saturday from 5-8 PM. Wind down and cool off with a jazz-leaning set that'll feature your favorite voices and ensembles from the Big Bands & Beyond.

"Jazz Brunch" will still be coming your way live Sunday morning, 10 AM-noon (Central), on 98.7 WVMO.

Released 60 years ago: “Trio ‘65” by Bill Evans (our copy here). Produced by Creed Taylor for Verve Records, this follow-up to the jazz pianist’s “Trio 64” LP introduced bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker. This album consists of compositions Evans had recorded on previous albums, re-imagined with this new trio. Reviews were good. Fun fact: In 1965, at age 35, Evans had already recorded over 25 albums as leader plus over 50 as sideman. More in Comments.

Shout out to the fellow student and community radio DJs who stopped out or volunteered their time to support WSUM Night at Lola’s! Thanks especially to DJ DH for sharing the spotlight with me. We felt the love from WVMO - The Voice of Monona and WORT FM, and some friends from Wisconsin Public Radio stopped by too!

Can you put the face to the voice? See photo captions to meet your favorite radio hosts!
