What if most of our sin, suffering, and shame were caused by a battle between duty and desire - and what if, in Christ, duty and desire can be united?

This week I'm talking with Heidi White about her book "The Divided Soul: Duty and Desire in Literature and in Life." A few nuggets:

๐Ÿ“š How Anne of Green Gables changed Heidi's life

๐Ÿ“š Why the parable of the prodigal son became the framework for her book

๐Ÿ“š What The Odyssey can teach us about faithfulness, temptation, and longing for home

๐Ÿ“š How literature shapes our moral imagination

This one's a feast, y'all!

What do you do when serving God starts feeling like an obligation?

Heidi White (Goldberry Books) says that joylessness is actually a signpost - not a verdict. And in her book The Divided Soul, she digs into why duty and desire have been at war inside us since the fall, and what it looks like when Christ starts to heal that divide.

We also talked about Odysseus, Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte's Web, and what it means to finally want what you ought to want. This one is so good!

New episode out now.

Meet my next guest โœจ

Heidi is an author and teacher who asks a question we all feel: What happens when what we should do and what we want to do are at war?

In her book โ€œThe Divided Soul: Duty and Desire in Literature and in Lifeโ€, she traces this tension from the fall all the way to redemption and finds surprising hope in the most unexpected places (yes, even Homer's Odyssey).

We had such a rich conversation, and I think you're going to love it.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ New episode drops tomorrow. See you then!

I've been hearing liturgies from Every Moment Holy for years, and I finally got me a copy - plus, 2 copies of the "Rites of Passage" edition for 2 young friends starting a new phase of life. Love the cute postcards from The Rabbit Room too!
