Part two with Dana VanderLugt is all about Charlotte's Web! It's her favorite classic, and the moment I started re-reading it, I understood why.

Yes, Charlotte's Web is a children's book, but it doesn't look away from the hard things: mortality, loneliness, the fact that some seasons end. E.B. White trusted his young readers with all of that, and Dana and I dive into it all in part 2.

Don't forget that "Enemies in the Orchard" is our August book club pick. Read along and join us live Thursday, August 27th at 7pm on Katie's personal Instagram for a full discussion with Dana.

Part two is live now. Go listen.

Is Charlotte's Web just a children's book? Dana VanderLugt, writer doesn't think so — and after rereading it for this episode, neither do I.

In Part 2 of our conversation, we discuss why E.B. White's classic has so much to teach adults about friendship, sacrifice, grace, and the incredible power of words.

I knew quite a bit about World War II before reading Enemies in the Orchard, but I had never heard a story from this perspective.

The history behind this book has made me want to dig deeper, especially into the stories of the young German POWs who ended up working on American farms.

Have you heard about this part of WWII history?

If this interests you, then come read Enemies in the Orchard with me and join our Oh My Word Book Club on Instagram Live on August 27 at 7 PM CT. 📚

I love hearing how an author discovers the story they were meant to write!

Dana VandeLugt fell in love with novels in verse as a teacher, and when she learned about the German POWs who worked on her grandfather’s orchard, she immediately saw the story taking shape through two different voices.

Hear more about how Enemies in the Orchard came to be in my conversation with Dana on Oh My Word with Katie.

Here's a piece of WWII history you may have never heard about.

In my conversation with Dana VandeLugt, we talk about the German POWs who were brought to the U.S. during the war and worked in places like farms and orchards. It's a fascinating part of history that doesn't get talked about much.

I'm so excited for tomorrow's episode!

In the episode, I’m talking with author Dana VandeLugt about her WWII novel in verse, Enemies in the Orchard, which involves German POWs working on a Michigan family’s apple orchard. Based on Dana’s own family history! While readers from 9 to 99 can enjoy this book, it doesn’t shy away from the messy realities of faith, loyalty, and what it really looks like to love those we consider our enemies.
