Anyone who has spent time in Madison is familiar with the annual YWCA Madison's Women of Distinction Awards. For 50 years these awards have honored women who have made significant contributions to the Madison area community. For many years the awards presentation took place at a luncheon in a downtown hotel or at the Monona Terrace Convention Center. In recent years the event was held at Garver Feed Mill during an evening cocktail reception. However, on Friday, May 8, 2026, the YWCA presented this year’s Women of Distinction Awards at its first Solidarity Sunset Soiree at the Marriott West in Middleton. Attendees were attired in beautiful sunset hues of orange, yellow, ecru, and lavender.

When asked, “How was your Mother’s Day?” most women respond with some version of, “It was lovely.” “My family made me breakfast in bed.” “We went to church together.” “We all went to brunch.” “We had a special dinner.” However, a small group of women had a very special Mother’s Day as they attended a “A Joyful Mother’s Day Evening Music Celebration.” This event was a display of jazz, gospel, and soul held at the Black Business Hub.

Crossing the stage to receive his UW law degree this month, Corey Saffold proudly wore a sash reading “Black Lawyers Matter.” Few seeing him now would know the obstacles he overcame to reach this milestone.

Armaad Jamaal Eubanks was born in 1984 in Madison, Wisconsin. Growing up on the south side of Madison, Jamaal was part of a close-knit community that shaped much of his early life. He played football with the Southside Raiders and spent many afternoons at the South Madison Neighborhood Center, now known as the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. Among his fondest memories was the lounge called Purlies, a local gem that generously allowed them to host fundraisers and to that sense of unity in the neighborhood.

From the UMOJA Desk: Graduating The Village

Every spring, graduation photos start filling timelines. Caps tossed into the air. Families packed into crowded auditoriums holding flowers, balloons, and tissues. Proud mothers posting long captions. Grandparents sitting in folding chairs trying not to cry before the ceremony even starts.
