Who are the Goose Island Ramblers and how do they redefine American folk music? In answering this question, Jim Leary makes us reconsider fundamental assumptions about folk music in the modern world, what such music sounds like, and what constitutes "old time." He also introduces us to an entirely new genre of American folk music that he calls "polkabilly"—not that the genre is something new or modern. It has been around for a long time in the Upper Midwest, but it has been largely ignored by scholars. Perhaps its eclectic mixture of ethnic music, early country music, and polka did not seem worthy of attention, since it was too hard to fit into a single stylistic category. Further, the region has often been disparaged. In this context, the purpose of Leary's book is "to win recognition for the music of . . . America's Upper Midwest—by sketching its broad history, its particular embrace by exemplary performers, its relationship to ideological currents—and to dub that music polkabilly"

The Pirate Ship, 116 N. Fairchild St., hosted live music for many years. Trumpet player Doc DeHaven, pictured in this poster here, played there for 14 years several times a week. The Pirate Ship was also a gay bar and then a sports bar named Lundeen’s before being taken over by Dotty Dumplings Dowry. Eventually, the building was torn down as part of the plan to build the Overture Center.
